Last night, when headed back to the dorm after class, I spotted a blue shortbed sitting in the professor parking lot. It had no dents or obvious rust, with an immaculate blue paint job and tan interior. The VIN is 1J7FT26EOKL427936. I left a note on the windshield, telling the owner about CC. If this is your Jeep and you see this post, thank you for joining!! :waving:

Pictures will be forth coming, I am still trying to figue out how to upload. The how to in the testing section is not completely helpful because photobucket changed their format again.

Your pretty brave writing down the vin of a truck which doesn't belongs to you and belongs to a guy you don't know or didn't talk to first. Kind of like trying to get the guys girlfriend's phone #, but we all know that is minor (getting phone #) compared to getting a # off of a strangers truck. IMHO I'd rather take my chances with the guys girlfriend over messing with his MJ. They must do things different in Mississippi, but here in MT....

Myself, I get upset if I see anybody hovering around any of my vehicles, for whatever the reason, if I don't know them.

My rule, just like for my woman...look and admire from a distance, but keep hands off and definitely no phone # lol.

We do it a bit differently down here in the South. Personally, I am from Louisiana, but most if not everyone, is very hospitable down here. I did no damage to his/her truck, and left a note explaining why I was "hovering" around the truck. As for taking the VIN number, isn't one of the main points of this website to keep track of all MJ's left?

If I "hovered" around your girlfriend for a while (when you weren't around) then left a note would that be OK?

I get where you are going with this one sir, I do. But it's not registered yet, nor is it as big a deal as it seems. If he or she was a Comanche fan to the extent where my actions agitated them, don't you think they would have been a registered user already?

You can hover all you want, but you can't touch. Not like he tried to open it up and take it for a joy ride. I've admired many a mj with the owner not around, and the owners who happen to come back to their truck before i leave have always been more than happy to talk jeep. Never had anyone as hostile as you sound.

I don't mind people "hovering" around my truck, it does happen a bit, and enjoy talking Jeep with them. But if I came out of a store or something and saw someone writing down my VIN who's not a cop, I'd damn sure want to know why. And if he/she were a cop, I'd also want to know why, but for different reasons.

I see where the dilemma is here, and at the time I guess I was too excited to see what problems could arise from it, and more excited that there was another Comanche at USM. I never planned to do anything bad with the VIN, just to register it so the list of Comanches is up to date.

Ah, he got that behavior from me. We want as many folks as possible to join our group, because of our desire to preserve these trucks, and we tend to leave messages on random MJ's that we enounter. Writing down the VIN number? Well, I do that too, simply for the forum's records. Even though I can run the VIN - I don't, as it's an invasion of privacy if I don't have a legal reason to do so.

However, he is very polite and would never harm anyone elses's property.

If it were me, I would record every VIN. Why? Because someday down the road, one of us may pick up a new to us MJ. How cool would it be to come onto our site to register it, ans already find it? You could see where it was, who owned it, and any mods at the time.

Just like license plates, I view a VIN as open info. It's not like it's hidden.

I agree with Rob. VIN #s are right there to be seen by anybody, yeah maybe not as visible as a plate is, but right there none the less. Its all about keeping track of these old, rare trucks. If I were some MJ owner that just had one and wasnt a member here(thank god I'm not one of those) I would be happy for someone to come look and admire my 20+ year old vehicle. It'd make me proud and possibly more interested in the rest of the bunch.

  • 2 months later...

I weathered the tornado just fine! As for campus...there is some significant damage. The Olgetree Alumni House is almost destroyed. Six other academic buildings had damage including most of the music buildings. The dorms and all others are fine but Hattiesburg towards the south side of Hardy street is torn up something fierce. We pulled together and had a campus wide clean up day Wednesday before classes started but the effects are still evident. We will recover and rebuild, but these kinds of things take time. This is a very close knit community and whatever it takes we will perservere and come out better than when we went in. SMTTT!

As for pics, those will come in time. I am about to start posting pics of the beginnings of my 97+ conversion so when I get the whole photbucket thing down pat I will post the pictures I have of the Comanche on here as well.

Honestly, the plate number would be a little better if it were my truck, because its easier to remember and less weird. A VIN is out for every one to see though, and I've talked Jeeps and been admired several times because of my MJ. My buddies think its funny to draw wieners on my hood until I faked a vandalism ticket on them as a payback joke haha but I'm totally cool with people checking out my dirty little Comanche.
