mpace6a
Since I want to keep body damage to a minimum on the mj, but still want to do some rough, down n dirty wheeling, I've been contemplating buying a title less xj to satisfy my wheeling needs. The problem is I have a low budget, so was planning on going 50-50 on it with a friend, with full intentions of making it a cheap down n dirty wheeler. Was hoping for some suggestions to keep it as cheap as possible, yet fairly capable. won't be liftinf it more than maybe 3 inches, possibly welding spider gears since it will be trail only rig. Ideas?
neohic
Sawzall everything that looks like it won't make it perform better offroad. Rinse and repeat as necessary. Done.
shelbyluvv
I fit 33's on a XJ with a BB. Embrace the Sawzall!

Thats more or less what we were planning, remove back glass, doors, front fenders (no need to cut if theyre not there, plus its spares for the mj!) headlights, anythign that could be more useful on something else, maybe chop the back. thinking about a minor cage, just to keep the body somewhat strong, and for roll protection around the driver and passenger. I fit 33's on a XJ with a BB. Embrace the Sawzall! just a 2" bb or 3? a buddy of mine i went wheeling with, who rekindled my xj love, has 31s with nothing but trimmed fenders, so I'm guessing just 2"? also, does anyone know about pictures showing welded spider gears? this xj won't see pavement anymore than it takes to put it on a trailer, and welding the spiders seems much, much cheaper than any lockers. HKB3
Buy a YJ, go SOA, get some 35's when the axles break pick up some waggy D44s and 5.13 gears oh and some lockers. Or just find something already built for cheap.

Title less xj's go for 500-750 very regularly here, and i want something that i won't care about hitting trees or flipping on its side.

Sorry to sound like a chump, but how much difference is ther than a $750 YJ and a $750 XJ?? Or a $500 XJ and a $600 YJ? Spend the extra $100-250 on the YJ, when something goes wrong, then you fix it. The YJ may be stronger than you think.
shelbyluvv
2" BB and a block in the rear. 15x7 wheels and 33x12.5 MTRs. It was a fun toy. I had like $500 into it including buying it. Look up "project budget beater" on NAXJA.
mpace6a
I'm all for a yj, id like to have one, but I've never seen one within reasonable driving distance that I could get for less than $2000

Wheeled just as good as my XJ with a 3" lift and 31s.
