Kona
Hi guys, so I got a 87 mj column shift , I redone the engine and it runs great!, redone the tranny seal and filter , now the truck won't shift ? Stays in first gear , it shifted fine before the maintance , fluids are good, my question is did I maybe forgot to plug something? Connector ? Or did I just f-up the tranny by replacing fluids and filter? It's just weird it won't shift now, any ideas on what to check or do other than a new tranny? Thanks! jimoshel
Kind of hard (But not impossible ) to screw up a tranny by changing fluid an filter. Should be looking at the shift linkage. Didn't get something hooked up or not hooked up right.
Kona
Could it be the TPS? All is hooked links, I have done this several times an never had a problem, now the TPS when unplugged does not affect the idle, so I'm thinking the tps is fried! My understanding is that TPS will cause this as well. Anyone had this?
Geonovast
The AW-4 doesn't like full one-shot fluid changes, you have to do it slowly, one quart at a time. You may have pissed off the trans itself. Unplug the TCU and see if you can shift it manually.
Kona
Unplugged the TCU and I'm able to shift manually no problem, could it be the TPS? Or jut need a new TCU?
Kona
Update: I bought a new TPS and plugged the TCU back and.... Still does the same thing , stuck in first gear, unplugged theTCU and fine! (manually) so I guess need a new TCU? Found one on eBay from a 89 xj, will this work? ComancheKid45
If its from an 87-90 XJ or MJ it should be a direct swap
HOrnbrod
Have you checked the 12V input at the inline fuse on the TCU harness?
Kona
Good idea!, didn't think about that, I'll check that tomorrow and get back to you all. Thanks
alleydog
My Son's XJ did the same thing. It was a bad output speed sensor, located on the left rear of the trans. I have seen it described as a switch. You can test it with an ohm meter, I believe, should flick between open and closed as you turn the rear output slowly. maybe it yust got unplugged. deziped
Check the OHM value of your solenoids in the AW4. You can do it at the TCU.
cruiser54
New engine? Did you get the grounds hooked up at the engine dipstick tube stud? To a nice shiny surface? That's the ground for the TCU itself and the TCU shift logic circuit.
Kona
All good things to look for, all grounds seem To Be in place, but I'll re check, I'm waiting in the "new TCU" we will see if that fixes it, I think is the TCU just because my buddy just threw the thing on the floor like it was garbage so maybe it got banged up and damaged inside.
