Dedaw Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 Oh $#!&, another thread. :wrench: Talking to my brother-in-law last week got me really thinking. I had given up on the idea of a 4BT in my truck thanks to the wonderful advice from you guys. The cost, time, and PITA of it was not worth it for a daily driver. Now, a wheeler or tow rig, a BT series is still definitely a very good possibility. Anyways, he looks at me half-joking and asks "why don't you toss one of these in?", as he points to his 1.6L Diesel Jetta. The one swap I had completely overlooked! My first car was a VW, and I still have a soft spot for those little guys. Even wanted to put one in my car, but funds at the time did not allow. Anyhoo, I'm fairly set on a 1.6TD(not TDI) swap, unless somebody can convince me that it's worth the hassle/cost to swap in a 1.9TDI. Has anybody done or seen one of these swaps? If not, definitely not worried. Would be cool to be a first, and I've seen several successfully swapped into Yota's. Hopefully a build thread will be coming along soon, like payday soon.
Comanchemodder Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 I'm not sure if you will save money. HPA Motorsports makes some adapters. http://www.hpamotorsport.com/tdijeep.htm

Comanchemodder Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 "Save money compared to what?" In your original post you included cost as your criteria for not pursuing the 4BT swap. Personally, I say go for it. Just make sure you document it here on Comancheclub!!

Personally, I say go for it. Just make sure you document it here on Comancheclub!! I can't afford the 8 grand+ as well as the time to do a 4bt. I WILL do a 4BT (or more likely 6BT) swap in the future. Most likely not in this truck or anytime soon. Unless of course, I just happen to come across one for next to nothing. ;)

Zenobian_84 Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 Am totally unfamiliar with VWs as a whole. :dunno: I say go for it though. You don't see too many people swap in something out of the ordinary on these rigs other than the usual: Chevy 350 GM 3.1 / 3.4 Jeep 4.6 or higher Stroker Not that there's anything wrong with those engines. It's definitely nice to see something out of the ordinary around here though. :wrench:
mnkyboy Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 Other then maybe better MPG it seems like a downgrade from your 4.0l
Dedaw Posted September 5, 2012 Author Posted September 5, 2012 @red; I thought the same. Nice to have something out of the ordinary. @mnky; From what I've read so far, I can get pretty close to the same HP as my 4.0 as well as better torque and a better low-end torque. Much more so if I were to cough up for a TDI.
Dadinator Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 Ian on powerblocks extreme 4X4 put a vdub diesel in a sammy. Check those episodes out online and see if you can get some pointers. They also did a veggie oil conversion on it.

Comanchemodder Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 It seems you are keen on a diesel swap. It would be cool, no doubt. If you want something cheaper, look into Merc OM617 swap. There are a few right ups On the net. I also saw two at the local pick n pull. Seems like a cheaper option if you can get a junkyard engine.
mnkyboy Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 Have you driven a TDI? They can post up decent numbers when hopped up but they rev like they have mud in the crank case. Here's a guy on NAXJA that's doing one http://www.naxja.net/forum/showthread.p ... volkswagen

carnuck Posted September 10, 2012 Posted September 10, 2012 My room-mate recently swapped the 1.5L TD in her rabbit for a crate 1.9 TD. Except the exhaust pipe, it was a direct swap but has more power.
