my86mj
so my motor took a dump. so i went on the craigslist machine and found a motor with new head gaskets. went and got its 150 bucks later its sitting on the stand in the shop. as i look at my purchase i notice pink installation oil on the cam. thats weird. i get the heads off and the valves have rebuild markings on them in grease pen. never been fired. then my buddies dad points out that the cylinders are honed and i see crosshatching. the cam was used and its missing half the rocker arms and lifters. i ordered an edelbrock performer cam and intake. i also ordered some comp cam lifters and roller rockers. but for 150 bucks i got a REBUILT 2.8!!!! mpace6a
Man wish I was that lucky when i bought a new 2.8! Paid $200 for a super clean one though! Just sucks that the one i bought is a newer block so it had an electric fuel pump and i had to swap intakes, timing covers, and so on. Still super clean though!
Pete M
I sure hope it's not one of those too-good-to-be-true things. like if they did all that work and found a cracked block or something awful. Here's hopin' it's all good.
mvusse
A rebuild 2.8 is still a 2.8. Kind of like a D35.
Zenobian_84
Pretty good deal for only $150.
mpace6a
A rebuild 2.8 is still a 2.8. Kind of like a D35. Not technically. The 2.8 has a bad rep because the particular block that came in the comanche was more or less the most unreliable engine in history. However, theres always a flip side. They either sucked, or lasted quite a long time. Not quite 4.0 long time, but still a while. And if you so happen to get a 2.8 out of a post 87 S10, S15, or their SUV counterparts, your doing alright because they were made to be alot stronger. I don't know what block my86mj has, but if he got the newer one, its well worth the 150 in my book, especially since it gets the jeep back on the road quicker! my86mj
the major problem with the chevy 2.8 was that they didnt drill the oil ports for the cam big enough so they got clogged easily which caused them to smoke and knock. and for the record my truck has outlasted 4 4.0s. people say they last forever but i will stick to my 2 point suck. Yep, a problem that was later solved with the newer engine blocks
