O2 sensor

Recommended Posts

I have a 1989 6 cyl, how do you know, or how can you check to see if your oxygen sensor is working correctly?

IF you can find a Jeep dealer that hasn['t scrapped the old scan tool that could read inputs from the Renix system, you take it to said dealer and pay them an exhorbitant price to hook up the scanner and read the sensor. However, since many "Jeep" dealers today are Chrysler dealers who have been required to add Jeeps to their lineup, they don't have the old tools.

Basically, if there's any doubt -- just replace it.

If you fit an Air/Fuel meter you can see the output of the O2 sensor at all times. It monitors the open-to-closed loop transition, and uses the 0-1 VDC O2 sensor output that is fed to the computer to indicate the A/F mixture on the meter.

Several years ago I checked the O2 sensor on my 88, 4L, by back probing the sensor with a high impedance VOM. Keep in mind the comanche uses a reference signal, +- 5 volts to the O2 sensor which regulates output voltage to be read by the ECM. It does not generate a signal like most O2 sensors.

With 100K on the clock the sensor is due for replacement. The sensor on mine is a titania sensor which regulates the reference voltage. It's performance can be observed by connecting to ground and the output under the vehicle at the O2 connection. I am not sure which years may have had this type of sensor.

A Renix era O2 sensor doesn't operate on a 0 - 1 scale, I think it goes from 0 - 5, so a standard A/F gauge wouldn't work properly.

You're right, 0-5 VDC O2 sensor output on the Renix. Forgot about that. But it can be done by using a wideband O2 sensor and A/F meter. Most of those have a 0-5v aux analog AFR output that can be fed back to the computer. It thinks it sees the same input as the old O2 sensor provided.
