What Gearing should I be running?

Recommended Posts

I'm running 3.5 " suspension lift with 31's. 4.0 and 5 speed. Wondering what gearing I shoud be running? Dogging it up hills on the interstate. 3:55 or 3:73's? Would like to do a 44 in the rear if not a 8.25 with disks. Thanks fellas.

Personally, with your set up, Id go at least 3.73, maybe even 4.10. It really depends on what kind of driving youll be doing. The more offroading/slow speeds, the higher ratio will suit better. But if youll be doing a lot of highway driving, something a little lower will work best.

I have 3.73s with 31" tires, 4.0 liter, nv3550, np231, dana44. 65 on the free way is a just little over 2000 rpm (not exactly sure since my speedo doesn't work properly). It does just fine but was much funner to drive with the factory size tires. I've had my 31" tires spinning in 4wd Lo in 3rd gear on a dirt hill before, but in 4HI it just bogs down even in 1st. 4.10 probably would have been better... I'd just go with 4.10, if it ends up too low for you liking then just go to bigger tires. lol. comanche.gif

Been there, done that. I had my '88 set up with 3.73s and 31x10.50 tires. The speed:RPM ratio was EXACTLY the same as my wife's XJ with stock tires and 3.54 gears. It was ... "okay" ... but I really wish I had more gear. I put the 3.73s in because I had them, but they were bought with the intention of running 30x9.50 tires, not 31s.

IMHO for your setup you should be running 4.10 gears.
