cb advice

Recommended Posts

i am looking at a midland handheld cb its a 75-785 model. does anyone have expiriance with a handheld cb.

i don't really want a fullsize cb, just a handheld because i will only use it on the trail, and maybe occasionally on the highway.

any advice would be great.

thanks,

Jared

I don't have first-hand experience, but a couple of the guys in my NAXJA chapter have used them. Range is very limited. I bought one at a Wal-Mart a few years ago (don't recall the brand), took it out to the parking lot, which is about 200 yards from I-95, and fired it up for a radio check. NO RESPONSE. I turned right around, went back inside and got a refund.

I use a compact size regular CB. It fits nicely in the ashtray indentation. I run it with a magnetic mount antenna and a plug to the cigarette lighter, so it's easily removeable when I don't want/need it. And it's FAR better than a hand-held.

do you have an exteranl antenna for it too?

Just the 9 or 10 inch rubber ant that comes with it. The box is here at work in my locker(?) don't know where the radio's at. Seriously, it's a waste of time and money. I bought a Cobra 19.

If your concerned about space in the cab...

Go with this Cobra:

The main power unit is small and easily fits under the seat out of the way, and then your just dealing with the mic. which has all the control on it..

We have a couple guys in the club running these both on their rigs and their tow rigs and have had zero problems with it...

I got an overhead shelf and put my little CB up there. I tried the hand-helds for a while and sometimes I couldn't talk to people even though their vehicle was right in front of mine. It seems to be a matter of power output rather than antenna size.

Right.

A standard vehicle-mount CB, even the compact models, puts out a full 5 watts. That's the maximum they can legally use. The hand-helds, depending on brand and model, are either 2 watts or 1/2 watt.

My first was a compact Radio Shack model. I took it along on a cross-country trip about ten years ago and in the mid-west I was getting out a verified 13 miles using a Radio Shack gutter-mount antenna. That's good enough for me. Sure beats not being able to talk to the big rigs 200 yards away from the Wally World parking lot.
