bottomline89
My truck keeps shutting off when I'm going down the road in gear and the last few times it wouldnt restart. It would turn over and act like it was goingto start then fall on its face. Its would restart in about 15 min. Then i found this milky looking crap in my air box coming from the pcv hose out of the valve cover but i can't see it on my dipstick
Akula69
Hard to say - what you describe could be two separate problems...or no problem at all! 1) No Start - if you have checked for spark and fuel pressure but haven't replaced the CPS you might want to try that, it can cause the symptoms you're describing. As a 5 speed, you should be able to 'bump' start it (key on, coast down a hill and put it in gear) if it's something other then the CPS. 2) Milky white deposit - ah...head gasket problems should show up as coolant in the oil, or oil in the coolant. Do you have a lot of blowby? if so, water in the air cleaner box (from rain or whatever) could mix with the blowby and cause the deposit. Good Luck
smuth
Also check out your TPS.
bottomline89
My tps is fine. And i have fire and gas pressure.
kyleag89
CPS as Akula said, this will cause the truck to just shut off. Next time it cuts out and won't restart immediately check for spark. If there is no spark then it is most likely the CPS.
mule13
mine did that a few times i found the wires on the cps had contacted the exhaust manifold and burnt the coating off, as it went down the road it would rub on the manifold more and ground out sending faulty signals i guess. i taped it up and moved it away from the manifold and ran it like that a few months till i remembered it needed replaced never happened again after i taped it up though. cruiser54
Next time it dies, unplug the CPS and plug it back in to see if it will re-start. If it does, you probably have a CPS problem. I with the other guys that you should inspect your CPS wiring, too. If you want to test your CPS for low output voltage, use the following. Renix CPS Testing and Adjusting Renix CPSs have to put out a strong enough signal to the ECU so that it will provide spark. Most tests for the CPS suggest checking it for an ohms value. This is unreliable and can cause some wasted time and aggravation in your diagnosis of a no-start issue as the CPS will test good when in fact it is bad. The problem with the ohms test is you can have the correct amount of resistance through the CPS but it isn’t generating enough voltage to trigger the ECU to provide spark. Unplug the harness connector from the CPS. Using your voltmeter set on AC volts and probing both wires in the connector going to the CPS, crank the engine over. It won’t start with the CPS disconnected. You should get a reading of .5 AC volts. If you are down in the .35 AC volts range or lower on your meter reading, you can have intermittent crank/no-start conditions from your Renix Jeep. Some NEW CPSs (from the big box parts stores) have registered only .2 AC volts while reading the proper resistance!! That’s a definite no-start condition. Best to buy your CPS from Napa or the dealer. Sometimes on a manual transmission equipped Renix Jeep there is an accumulation of debris on the tip of the CPS. It’s worn off clutch material and since the CPS is a magnet, the metal sticks to the tip of the CPS causing a reduced voltage signal. You MAY get by with cleaning the tip of the CPS off. A little trick for increasing the output of your CPS is to drill out it’s mounting holes with the first drill bit that just won’t fit through the original holes. Then, when mounting it, hold the CPS down as close to the flywheel as you can while tightening the bolts. Revised 11-29-2011
Jeep Driver
It would turn over and act like it was goingto start then fall on its face. Its would restart in about 15 min Similar to what mine did.......fuel pump relay was bad.
bottomline89
how about this kicker.. pulled the head today, antifreeze in 5,6,and 3 cylinders... PRAYING FOR A BAD GASKET!! but the gasket looks fine, looks like a cracked block but i'm gonna search for that crack to be 100% sure another question.. Will a carb. 258 out of a 80 cj fit?
