Winch Bumpers....

Recommended Posts

I think the tubular bumper you put in your projects section looks real slick for a standard production bumper, but I see what you mean about it hanging down so low on the sides.

Is there anyway to modify the bumper you had for a winch? It really matched your truck great and no one else I've seen has anything quite like it!

Yer could build something like this:

Then cut the grille out and mount the winch back a bit, and bend up a hoop for it. Or by a pre-fabbed one. And maybe box in the ends of the bumper as you desire.

I dunno about you but I can't justify $300 or w/e on a bumper.

I have very mixed feelings about big bumpers..... I loved mine unitl I started wheeling hard. Then I found it hurt my approach angle too bad, and it will be leaving my rig. As for tube bumpers.... I think they look poserish. I am not sure what kind of set-up I am going to use on Pong this time, but the winch is more then likely going to be going where they went from thew factory, especially since I am goint to a v-6 motor, I will have plenty of room to mount my winch there, especially if I go with one with remote solenoids :brows:

If I had to do it all over again, I would use a moutning system like Rigid Co.'s and make a tight fitting narrow winch bumper, one that complemented front approach angles.

my only qualm with that backbone is look how much grille the winch covers up... i don't know about your jeeps, but mine doesn't like to stay cool as it is... especially when offroading.

other than that its completely BA! i could run a nice, high angle of attack bumper with it too.

The guy there told me they just recently made a couple small changes to the Back Bone system. The web site has NOT been updated as yet...

Its now 5lbs lighter, and offers better air flow to the radiator. They also moved the two tow points up and out a bit.

I will make my own bumper to attach to this.

You KNOW youll see pics along the way!!!

Stay tuned.

awesome... I'm real interested to know how the whole cooling thing works out/see the new version, cause i know on 235s my jeep doesnt like to stay cool... I'm gonn ahave more work to do after i lift it, cause it's barely cutting it as it is.

I keep hearin lots of you all telling me that you all have cooling problems on your rigs. I would seriously look at wether or not my mech fan was working right, as well as my electric fan. I had no issues on Pong (except when rad fins got filled up with mud) with my rig ever running "hot" on the trail. It was very rare that I even turned my rig off. The only thing I did was rigged my fan to run off a switch.

I thought I had some cooling problems when I had idiot lights......

I swapped in some factory gages and now see the temps will climb a bit but not aweful...like 215 on a hot day out on the trail. I switch on the factory electric fan and it drops tio 210 where it normally is.

I also have a three row rad, but NO AC.

my cooling problems go a bit deeper than fans... and i have thought about hood vents, we cut some in my bro's XJ.

i have a switch runnin my elec. fan

i have replaced the fan clutch, and would tac-weld it together rather than buy a new one... i think its a dumb idea anyways, my jeep never runs cool enough for it to matter.

replaced waterpump

replaced bottle/cap, replaced radiator.

its been overhauled fairly well. now i just need to get all new hoses, and a pressure flush.

the main difference was the radiator, the other things were steps on the way there. :brows: they would've failed eventually anyways though it is a heep.

oh, and 2 thermostats. (i THINK theres a 160 in there right now.. but ill never know til i take it back out, the jeep runs at 200-210 even with the weather in the teens.)

BTW, 210 IS CORRECT...

160 degree T stat is not the best idea either...180 is really as lo as you should run in a 4 liter, IMHO. Also, be sure you get out all the air in the system. NOT doing so can cause it to overheat.

I added a couple 3/4" spacers to the rear of my hood hinges. In an effort to allow hot air to escape. Didnt notice any difference.

I didnt mean to jack the thread, I was just going by what I have found that works. The only thing those spacers do, is let your blowby get on your windshield  and the hood vents.... might lower temps, but also exposes your components to water :hmm: At most the vents lower temps 10* a couple of replaced sensors or components due to water damage might make you think twice about them ;)

I don't have any blow by so I am OK in that reguard. I used wood as it was only a test...didnt do anything I could notice.....

As for the vents, I COMPLETELY agree!!!

i was going to post up the same thing about the vents, but didn't feel like getting into it... tims TPS is acting up now due to being wet constantly. thinkin bout u-pullin him a hood.

burping my system doenst work well but i think ive got it down, (no rear-temp sensor hole)

and i top 210 if i sit around at a drive-thru or something, but the elec fan will bring it back down.

and yeah i didnt put the 160 in for fun, its what we had lyin around but itll never run 180 much less 160 so I'm not that worried, it just takes a little longer to warm up in the AM

back to bumpers,

did you decide to build your own detours style winch mount? is that what i read in the CW project thread?

I placed my order for the Back Bone from Detours Tuesday I think.... he is going to call me sometime next week when its built and ready to pick up.

Nice having him so local!! I save on shipping but have to pay TAX!!! :headpop: :headpop:

I'll begin the bumper once I get it and my MJ back from the shop...

Hey is Detours still making MJ sliders? I looked on their site and didn't see anything about them.

I don't know for sure, but I would say yes he is.

Its just likely a small part of what he offers and it dosen't "rate" to make it to the web site... Although, I could swear I did see it there somewhere... Maybe it was Bandits site.
