Basically, to root your phone is to exploit the security feature. It unlocks your phone, giving you full access to the software or the OS of your phone. Thus allowing you to customize, modify, or remove and replace your phones operating system software. That's the long answer. Short answer is to unlock your phone so you can remove bloatware, extend battery life, etc......HTH
