Pete M
Yup, count your blessings that it blew up now rather than later.
Eagle
No! A GM 2.8L threw a rod? Impossible. Say it isn't so. Do yourself a favor. Forget the 2.8L. Frankly, you're better off with a 2.5L Jeep I-4, and it'll bolt up to the same bellhousing.
Pete M
While that's very true, then he'd have to screw around with installing the electronics. Go with the 3.4L conversion and get an aftermarket carb. It seems Chevy eventually figured out how to properly oil their 60* engines. :D
jbhill
3.4 do you mean 4.3?
DirtyComanche
He means 3.4. The 4.3 is a cut down SBC and does not share the same bellhousing pattern, or really anything in common with the 2.8 or 3.4. The 2.8 and 3.4 are very similar. Unfortunatly the 3.4 is rather hard to find, seeing as they seemed to only come in camaros and firechickens. But yeah, it is a better engine. pingpong
no they still havent gotten it right. Well at least as far as I am concerned. My wifes alero (FWD car) has had the eninge gone through twice under warranty for some of the same problems that plaqued the early 2.8's. Mainly the manifold gasket leaking, thus causing it to run hot, then causing problems with the head. When will GM learn that cast iron and aluminum don't mix, unless you can isolate the metals better. BTW this is also a problem on the 4.3's
Pete M
Oh, I never said they got it right, I only said they figured out that the 2.8L's oil passages sucked. There are other issues (it's a chevy after all). :D
pingpong
I have found this out cause I looked at a bunch of 4.3's before I bought the one I have now, and it seems like it is a problem across GM's line of v-6's. You still can't beat the bang for the buck... Once you change to a quality aftermarket set of gaskets no issues.... Go figure
86FUBAR
yes anything would be better than the 2.8 but i can't afford much els. besides i Love the 2.8 ,i didnt change the oil in it fer just over 4.5 years .just added erl when needed for the first year (then i fixed the leak), Iv run it 4 quarts low several times/over heated it a dozen times and kept on goin / hit 6400 rpm probably another dozen times floatn valves and blown smoke and on top of that it lives at 4500 rpm or more on the highway.
