No clock, Radio or Dome lights???

Recommended Posts

Alrighty, i seem to post up problems on this forum more than anything else

However were back to electrical issues on my 90 (4.0/AX15/4x4). On my drive home from work yesterday going from 1st to 2nd gear i bumped the fuse box with a foot, atleast something right in the area of the fuse box. right then i lost the radio, OEM clock and dome lights... I check the fuse box and the fuses, including swapping them out and still nothing. There is no fluid leaking from the mst. cyl and the fuse box is clean.

This is the same truck that had the fuel pump issue a couple months back which i fixed with a new wire bypassing the old, I'm wondering if internal circuits in the ECM are beginning to die out for some reason and this was next in line... Ill swap ECMs with the 89 someday and see what happens....The truck still runs and drives just those options are vacant :dunno:

Which fuse was blown, if you don't mind me asking?

I've had intermittent issues with all of the above not working (clock doesn't hold the time, loses about 20 minutes a day, dome lamps only sometimes work and radio only once came on when I hit a bad patch of washboard) so I went out and checked, and sure enough, I had a blown 10 amp fuse too. There were a bunch of ten amp fuses in the glove box from the PO, (I'm guessing this isn't the first time it's happened) so I changed it out. Then I got power to the radio, but not enough to make it work. The dome lights still weren't working, and now the clock doesn't seem to have power any more.

Because it was a little melted looking, I switched out the 15 amp radio switch with one of the 10amps, and the radio came on, but only through the speakers on the right side of the truck. The clock and dome lamps still don't work.

I checked the manual to see what the first fuse I replaced was for (maybe it's the clock? I'm not sure which fuse the "clock" label is referring to, because it's not lined up with this one, but it is lined up with the one above) but it's labelled as a 30 amp fuse, so that's why it's blowing all the time, likely, heheh... PO didn't seem too mechanically inclined... :thwak:

So tomorrow I'm going to go get some proper fuses and see what's up.

Edit: got to this thread from the search feature, didn't realize it was over a year old... heheh...

Dejavu.

Radio (#3 aftermarket) has no sound. Display works. Keep time. Keeps station presets.

Dash lights don't work.

When I turn on headlights, factory clock goes blank. It does keep time, though.

I looked at the electrical manual to trace the wiring. I found all three - radio, dash, clock - run through a relay that is tied to the light switch. The relay is behind the left kick panel.

I had removed the LKP when I replaced the park brake cable. I had to squeeze the wires back in to re-install the LKP. I must have damaged the relay  . When I can get to it, I will look at the damage. I hope I can fix it.
