ekulrenlig
I just changed the oil in my MJ today and started it up to check the fluid. When I pulled out the dipstick I could hear it sucking air down into the tube. Is this normal? I've never noticed it before.

mike
yea, you don't check engine oil with it running  , you check auto tranny fluid with it running but not the engine oil. you will not get an acutate reading on the dipstick and you might put way too much in or not enough. BLHTAZ
Yes, it would be normal for it to suck air in that way, and as stated, you should never check the oil while running as it will appear low and you will over fill it if you add more. ekulrenlig
Ok, well I'm allowed to be an idiot every once in a while. I always thought that after you change it you should start it up and check the level and check for leaks. My bad. Do you get any oil in the air filter? I do get a little bit of oil in the air filter. BLHTAZ
Ok, well I'm allowed to be an idiot every once in a while.No...you're not an idiot by any means. That is actually a quite common misconception that I have seen many times in my years of working on/with vehicles. ;) There is no such thing as a stupid question...especially if it saves you grief/money :D .
