jeeptruck86
My friend just bought a right-hand drive JK Unlimited for his mom to use on her mail route. May I just pause here and say SWEET! Anyways. He removed the passenger seat (left side, awesome) to put a sort of shelf in it's place for sorting and storage. When he uplugged the harness from the seatbelt the airbag light came on in the dash. I know my wife's KJ has the weight sensor which tells the Libby when or when not to deploy the passenger airbag. I'm not sure if JK's do as well. Also, do any of you have any idea whether or not the light = a thrown code which would prevent it from passing inspection? Also also, the illuminated light on the dash is moderately annoying. Is there a way around this that doesn't include inadvertently exploding the airbag for no reason? Any help would be appreciated.
Automan2164
Going to have to consult the dealer on this one. You need something there to make it think it's still there, and there is no weight on it. It's looking for the weight sensor in the seat. Since the BCM doesn't even get a reply, it tosses a code. Usually also disabling the airbag system also. As for inspection, I would say that it would depend on the state. We don't have that in IL, but from what I hear from other states, that would be a fail. Rob
whowey
There is supposed to be a PCM flash available that fixes that for postal service vehicles.
beepbeepmyredjeep
Yes, the JK has a weight sensor in the passenger seat. Whenever my 30 lb dog sits up front, my JK disables the passenger side airbag because it thinks there's a small child in the seat (which isn't far from the truth, my dog acts like a little kid). dasbulliwagen
I was just looking on Chrysler for info about reprograming for your situation, and came up with nothing. I know they have stuff for situations like this and for vehicles that are converted for the handicapped, but was unable to find anything specific for the JK. If I were you I would call your local dealerships service manager and explain your situation. I would like to think that the manager would call Chysler and get the info they would need to fix your moms JK, but I really couldnt tell you.... depends on how far the manager will go to make it right by you. And as far as not passing inspection... its different in different states, but in North Carolina, having an air bag light on will NOT cause you to fail inspection. The air bag system has nothing to do with vehicle emissions, or the actual safe operation of the vehicle. I guess in NC they don't care if you get hurt in your vehicle, as long as the vehicle is safe in every other way.
jeeptruck86
Thanks guys. I'll try to keep tabs on my buddy's situation so that this thread get some type of closure. Nothing worse that searching for a thread only to find the one you need with no follow up. :wall:
Dechion
What year/motor/etc on that JK? It just so happens I work maintenance for the Post Office (though not on the vehicles). With a bit more info I can go ask our auto tech if he knows what to do. I have see some of our vehicles at other offices converted with a shelf for carrying mail where the passenger seat used to be. No guarentees, but it won't hurt me to ask the guy.
Motion Offroad
The dealership can do it, however you need to get an exemption from the NHTSA. Their is a form you have to get certified from the NHTSA prior to taking it to the dealership for them to even touch it (at least here). You can also just pull the fuses. They are under the large yellow "cap" in the fuse box. There are several fuses depending on if you have the side impact seat airbags or not. I "think" that if you pull the fuses that the light may still show on the dash. The only way I know to get rid of the light on the dash/center console is to take it to the dealer. Only reason we know any of this is because we had an airbag go off on us while wheeling. We looked for a way to disable them while offroad and this is what we came up with. Being it's a postal JK you may be able to talk your dealer into doing it without the NHTSA form.

meljr
There is a new Jeep dealer who calls himself "Postal Pete" (I'm not making this up) and sells new and used RHD JKs. He also mods them and offers a shelf like you describe: large picture can be found here --> http://www.postalpete.com/images/p4290011.jpg They carry over 150 RHD Jeeps in stock and offer quite a few accessories for mail carriers. You can call Pete at 815-777-1777 and their website is http://www.postalpete.com . I don't know where they are located offhand, but it is in the Central time zone. He may be able to advise you how to deal with the airbag situation. -mel
jeeptruck86
Thanks for the link. My buddy called and talked to someone at "Postal Pete" and basically what they said is just leave it unplugged. The airbag will not deploy in an accident (no seat) and that's why the light stays on. Also, it will still pass inspection so no worries there. Thanks for the help fellas. I knew I could count on you.
