a good friend of mine is moving to Germany. She's convinced that she wants to take pretty much everything with her. I'm trying to convince her otherwise, but in the meantime does anyone have any experience with sending a large amount of stuff overseas?

Well even those CONEX containers aren't water proof. Have our stuff was ruined by water. And the several valuable items I watched them pack up didn't make it to the destination. Obiviously the container was opened before it was ever shipped. Probally at the local warehouse where the packers removed those items they had eye balled while packing it up. Buy your household items in Europe and live like one. Its cheaper than here. Remeber they use 240 volts for electronics, or did.

she had found a company that will handle the entire thing; packing, shipping, customs, etc. the price is outrageous and I'm hoping to find some more affordable alternatives. :(

and yes, they have 240 over there. she'll be selling the TV rather than taking it.

The military always paid for my moves, but they were still a major pain in the azz. Had to ship the stuff 3 months early, and it still wouldn't be there when I got there. No matter what, stuff always came up missing or broken. My advice would be don't even think about shipping anything big like furniture. Have stuff boxed up and ready to ship via mail, leave it with a trusted family member or friend, then have boxes mailed over after an address is established. Unless she plans on NEVER coming back to the US. Make a detailed inventory and photos of every single item. Good luck EVER getting reimbursed for missing or damaged items.
