D44 identication

Recommended Posts

What are the easiest and most reliable way to identify a Dana 44. I thought I found one the other day in a 1990 cherokee because I could see it had the very wide brake shoes on it, but some seem to believe that xj only had them from 87-89. I could not get under to look at the housing because it was sitting on the ground with no wheels. I am able to get it for 50$ but I want to be sure it is a 44. Also I found a mj that I assume is a 86 because it had a 2.8 emblem on it and this also had the wide brakes, could this possibly have been a 44. Thanks for any help

'86 will have Metric Ton badging, and it will be the AMC-20 rear end.

None were factory.

Swaps happen. Since they bolt right in. Some junkyards don't even know the difference - and will even sell a D44 off to a mechanic that will go "Hmm? Ohwell, it bolts in."

But, I've never found one that had been swapped. I've seen very few originals too.

Oh, another thing, are you sure on the year of the XJ? Yards f' that up too.
