kineticMJ Posted February 23, 2011 Share Posted February 23, 2011 ok.. so I have been around the forum (mostly reading) for a little while so I thought I would share the progress on the project. Started with a 1987 MJ long bed.. All in all it was in really good shape, minimal rust, no frame rust/damage, floor pans had a few small pin holes but nothing serious. I really lucked out in finding this MJ.. Once I got the truck I started pulling it apart, so that I could replace it with my 2000 XJ parts. Instead of flooding the forum with pictures I created a little site that has all of them uploaded in different phases.. right now I am trying to get it running again (changing the gas tank to a fuel cell setup).. I can see some of the "non bolt-in" work required for the swap in this pic: Do you have any photos of how you attached the top of the dash or the mods you did to the firewall for the newer style steering column? Any idea what you'll be doing for the rear fender flares? Also, I have to ask - if you are going through the time and expense of stripping this truck down for a full repaint, why wouldn't you pull the dents out the bed and tailgate? kineticMJ Posted February 23, 2011 Author Share Posted February 23, 2011 Well I had a friend say he could paint the truck for me, but it had to be the day next so I only had time to prep the body and fix a few things.. I did what I could with it. the dash mod needed a place to mount since it didn't have a spot for the tabs to line up Just a piece of steel welded to make tabs worked great.. ricksjeepster Posted February 25, 2011 Share Posted February 25, 2011 Terrawombat : why don't you try to cut off the rear sides of a 97-01 XJ and weld´em to the previously cutted sides of the bed sides of your mj do some minor body work and you will be good to go... Rear bumper ends are a diferent story but you can get it done by using 2 sets of bumper ends ;) just try to ask ivanonlysix about it he done the entire 2001 conversion inside-out and his MJ looks like factory work :cheers: Looks great! Toughest was trying to find a spot for rear speakers, originally wanted to use the speaker pod from the rear of the 2000 xj, but with the bucket seats sitting higher than the factory bench seat anytime i hit a bump in the road my head hit the speakers.. so crafted a way to mount them behind the seats and angle it enough so that the sound isn't projected straight into the back of the seats And no, the speaker pod is not bolted directly to the rear wall, I utilized the studs that the interior panels attach to and extended a 1" x 1/4" thick piece of steel across the back of the speaker pod. Just need to find/make a panel to cover the curve at the rear of the headliner.. if anyone has a suggestion on how to cover it let me know. Make sure you close off the old pump location off good and tight, otherwise you will learn that gas will start to leak when you fill the whole tank up. http://www.genright.com/ProductInfo.asp ... id=APR1000 That is the ring that I used, and it has worked out well for me so far. Got some bed armor made from http://www.diegosdeals.com (PACIFIER on the forum here) with a spot to mount the hi-lift as well as a way to mount the tonneau cover that is a few inches short for the long bed. Finally removed the drop in liner and did the bedliner kit. The armor is ready to install, the weather has prevented me from finishing it up, hopefully it will stay clear enough to finish it up in a couple of days.. They ride great on road and off road, I don't do anything super crazy offload so they were the right move for me.
