maddzz1
I have a friend with a 95 Maxima 6cyl Has been having overheating issues. New water pump, thermostat, and rad cap. Think that prob is fixed. Now the other prob: Will only blow heat if pressing on the gas, let off the gas and it starts blowing cold. Clogged HC? I can't say for sure, but has "stop leak" been used on a long term basis to deal with radiator system leaks? My family owns Nissan dealerships in the area here (not that this is just a Nissan issue), and we have found those that used stop leak over a prolonged period gummed up their radiators and water pumps causing eventual over-heating. After flushing the system I recall one of the Technicians mention the heater wasn't working unless giving the vehicle gas. Replaced heater core (clogged with stop leak), and problem solved. One of my favorite past times of working at the dealerships was listening to war and horror stories about car repair jobs the technicians had. By today's standards those technicians were and are dinosaurs, but I sure learned a lot from them.
maddzz1
I don't think any stop leak was ever used.
boman40
Did you use Nissan factory parts or local parts store. Well the only reason for asking is that on a Honda Accord that I own. Had some heating issues. Found out that you need to use factory parts, especially the thermostat. Jack around with it for three until my friend who is a Honda mechanic got back from vacation. Put in a factory thermostatic, fixed all the problems except for my step daughter paying me to fix it. On Honda's the cooling system needs factory parts to work right. If the cooling system is like Honda's, you will need to bleed it the right way.
maddzz1
Not sure about the stat. It is still running hot, but only on the highway; so I'm thinking fan clutch
jeepdoggydogB
For whatever reason, I had always associated fan clutch issues with overheating in trafic.

carnuck
Sounds like the heater may have an air bubble. That or the vacuum control has a loose/cracked line so it's not holding the valve open to let hot water through the rad. Or the dash control vacuum isn't opening the damper. (on my MJ the valve above the brake pedal kept getting the hose knocked off, then it wouldn't go off defrost!)
