CWLONGSHOT
Do yourself a favor and buy a HD diff cover for it. If you plan on any time in the rocks!!! those covers are PAPER thin and will ruin you day in a hurry if you don't. At the VERY LEAST, remove the cover and grind off the lip allong the lower edge. It will help reduce the cover getting peeled back and puking your fluid all over the trail. YES, THIS IS EXPERIENCE TALKING!!!  :D CW
pingpong
X2 on the diff cover. Blue Torch Fab makes one, and it is pure beef and will take abuse :brows: The companion flange runs around 40 bucks wherever you get it at. JUst make sure to get the spicer flange, and not the Ford one. Also you can convert it to a regular yoke by pulling an 8.8 yoke of a mid 80's F150. Be advised that the flange does help protect the you joint. Also this axle is a pig.. and hangs down low

88swampedmj
oh thanks for the tips, i guess ill get that diff.. how much are they? iam on a tight budget haha, and the driveshaft ujoint idea sounds good i may look at some older f150s at a junkyard...or would it be stronger to use that big plate with an adapter? 87manche
either way the u-joint is the weak spot. Like was mention before, the flage helps protect the yoke a little bit.
88swampedmj
cool ill try to get the flange/ujoint adapter thing is there a website that has them? or store? oh don't i also need a proportioning valve or w/e for the brakes?.. what type should i get...my friend has a 60/40 one..but should i get an adjustable one? 88MJay
Don't spend $40 on the flange adaptor. Any Spicer dealer can get the part for you for around $20. I don't remember the part number though for the 1310 adaptor. Let me look around and see if I can come up with it.
88MJay
Aha! Spicer number 2-2-1379 Only took me about a minute. Google rules.
88swampedmj
where would a spicer dealer be? could i just gank one off another explorer at the junkyard? and get explorer u-joint straps for one side and my manche straps for the other? 88MJay
We have a few here locally in Ohio. I believe Napa is a Spicer dealer. At least they used to be. Look in the phone book for drivetrain parts, or heavy duty truck parts, or driveshaft shops etc.
pingpong
My local Napa isn't.. adn I ended up having to buy my flanges from MORE.. way overpriced... but when you need something... sometimes it is easier to just pay the bill.
