Coffee can in the engion compartment.

Recommended Posts

in my 92 Mj and the 89 XJ parts donor I have what looks like a coffee can, on the right side of the engine mounted to the fender. It has 4 hoses coming and going from it.

What is this thing and can I ripe it out. I am in Alberta so we don't have a lot of emissions laws for this year of vehicle.

Thanks

that is probably the vacuum canister, it collects blowby from the egr valve on the top.

some people mount a bottle on the drivers side and run the tube there and it collects the oil that blows by,then just pour it back into the engine.. if it is what I'm talking about there should be oil soaked sponges on the bottom of it,dripping oil. i took mine out cause it was so full of oil it dripped and made me think i had a bad seal or blown gasket somewhere.once i had it out i figured out what it was and that i could get new filters for it but by then i had it out so i just left it out. you'll have to plug any vacuum hoses connected to it if you remove it.(IF IT IS THE VACUUM CANNISTER)

It isn't a vacuum canister. It is an owner-installed, makeshift catch can to collect the oil forced out through the CCV inlet tube when the system stops working normally. The purpose is to interrcept the oil before it drips into the air cleaner.

I've actually done this temporarily before. Worked pretty well.

It is the charcoal canister for the EVAP system. All my XJs and MJs have had it. Leave it in place or your will smell gas fumes all the time.

Does it look like this?

That is what it looks like. So if has to stay is they anyway of servicing it or is it a re and re.

Charcoal cannister to remove fumes from fuel tank and send it thru intake to be burned instead of just wafting off into the air.

You'll want that. If nothing than just for fumes. You want to keep that Alberta air clean, don't you??

They rarely need to be "serviced". Mine (90, 88) are just basically filled with a steel wool kind of material and of course, some charcoal) the only thing I've ever needed to do to this is change the vac lines, as they will get crumbly and crack. They're attached to the fuel tank via rollover valves and they just pop on/off, no clamps.

:redX: It's purpose is to collect and re-cycle fuel vapor from the gas tank back into the intake , you might be best not to mess with it as all the emission systems are inter-connected you will generate false info to the engine management computer ( Renix )causing you no end of hassle :shake:

Silly me. When you wrote "coffee can" I foolishly believed you meant a coffee can.

If you want accurate answers, it's helpful to ask questions using correct terminology. It's okay if you don't know what something is, but don't describe something as a coffee can if it isn't a coffee can. Coffee cans have often been used as makeshift oil sumps on XJs and MJs so your question was very misleading to us literal-minded olde phartes.

there is a filter that goes in that canister, its at the bottom and almost noone ever changes it... i did mine a few months ago while i had the motor out and it was easy to get to.. if you pull the canister out, the bottom is actually removable and theres a round filter inside... they go for about $5 at the parts stores..

Thanks shelbyluvv You nailed it the first time.

Next time I try to add pictures, yes they are worth a thousand words.

I thought saying "it looks like a coffee can" would be better than a cylinder, aproxamentlly12 inches tall with a dynamiter of 8 inches with, x2 1/2 inch I.D. cloth braded hoses and x2, 3/8 I.D cloth braded hoses to cast moulded male fittings secured with pinch clamps. This is starting to sound like a warranty report from work. All I need now is to put the number codes in and I can send it.

For those that don't know me you are probably thinking I am a sarcastic @$$%$#@ and for those that do know me they are laughing they butts off right now.

I am swapping the 4.0 from the XJ into a 88 MJ that has a 4 banger in it so I will just replace the lines and change the filter in the canister so I will be good to go for another 20 pulse years.

Thank You everyone ells as well. Coffee can for a oil sump. I am thinking this might be something cool for a rat rod.

yea that thing there, its part of the egr system, but when you get alot of blowby from a warn out engine it also absorbs all that excess oil blow by. least thats what mine did. i did what Eagle said ran the line that goes to it to a can/bottle mounted up front where my air cleaner used to be.i don't really smell gas fumes when i drive but i work on diesels all day and half the time i covered in diesel or oil of some sort so maybe i just don't notice it lol. i can't tell any difference in how the truck runs

what would disconnecting it do?I'm getting 14 mpg running 33's with 3.54 gears temp usually runs about 205. have plenty of power in everything but 5th gear.
