i have a wrangler ax15 i got cheap.on the 89 wrangler ax15 the t-case is clocked up more then the cherokee/comanche ax15. can the rear of the trans housing that the t-case mounts on, on a wrangler ax15 be switched with that of a cherokee/comanche ax15?

but why would you want to? it means better ground clearance. you might need to take a big hammer to a spot on the floor, but I didn't in my 88 (99 TJ stuff).

Yes it can.

With complete disassemble and rebuild of the transmissions. Would be easier to redrill the rear flange of the transmission if the improvement in ground clearance really bothered you.

Uh, no. That's only involved when switching from a 2wd rear housing to a 4wd housing. The ONLY difference between the XJ/MJ ones and the YJ/TJ ones are where the holes are drilled for the T-case. He'll need to take the shift arm out, and the midplate bolts, then just switch them.

Looked like the entire rear half of the transmission to me, and a lot more involved.

That's just a case. All that's in the back half is 5th gear. 1-4 and reverse are in front of the midplate. All he needs to do is remove the shift arm, the (eight I think) midplate bolts, and fenagle it off. There aren't even clips on the bearings like there are on the front half.

To OP: I have a YJ AX-15 out in the shed that I can pop the rear section off and take pics tomorrow if you want. I need to take it apart anyway to make sure it's not scrap.

My '88 MJ has a Wrangler (YJ) AX-15 and transfer case in it. The swap was done by/for the previous owner ... I bought it that way. The transfer case doesn't hit the floor and there is no need to modify the transmission to "unclock" the transfer case.
