ricksjeepster
has anyone done this before? my 88 MJ (4 Banger) 4 gear tranny is not working properly anymore and I wonder if I can throw in a 91 wrangler 5 speed tranny is it a direct swap? including the tranfer case and everything else??? Thanks for your advise Rick
mnkyboy
The wrangler t case is clocked a little different but as far as I know it will fit . I know people here have done it
Geonovast
Direct swap. AX-5 is identical to the AX-4, aside from some minor interior differences, such as having a 5th gear. T-case for a Wrongler is clocked up a bit, but shouldn't be much of a problem.
dasbulliwagen
ALL PREVIOUS RESPONSES ARE ASSUMING THAT THE WRANGLER IS A 4 CYLINDER ALSO. If the Wrangler is a 6 cylinder none of this will work. Just wanted you to be sure about this before going too far.
jimmy21669
I am getting ready to do this to my 87 MJ. Have a 94 YJ AX5 and 231 that is going in. 2nd advantage....EXTERNAL SLAVE!!
dasbulliwagen
I'm ready to do the same thing to mine, but my donor is from an 86....also external slave!
JeepcoMJ
yup. 4 cyl to 4 cyl 5 speed/4 speed are direct swap. may be input bearing differences because of differences in the input shaft's bearing surface, but nothing that can't be worked around. make sure that you get the slave and bellhousing for the '91. may be the same, but just in case, get that. ricksjeepster
Thanks to all for your help! and here's another question for yah ... What about a 99´ 4 cyl XJ manual tranny with 5th gear? I know that I'm gonna have to use the 99 flywheel (Because of crank sensor) and clutch set, but i think it could work too... what you guys think? :typing: question is because a friend of mine has one with everything on it , including T-case, so if it is possible it could be better to have the newer installed instead of the 91´ wrangler one.. JeepcoMJ
You will NOT be using the 99 flywheel. It has different timing windows as it is for an mpfi 4 cyl. You will need the 99 bellhousing, throwout plate and bearing, clutch set, slave cylinder, and master cylinder, and the 99 transfercase can't hurt either. carnuck
I have an XJ AX-5/NP207 (I think. Could be a NP231) with 60K on them, but it's in Seattle
