Front shock replacement

Recommended Posts

I need to replace my front shocks in my 4x4 MJ. I will be adding some 2" spacers at the same time. The shock bolts on the axle are very rusted and look like they will break if I touch them. My MJ is my DD and I live at an apartment in MD so I work on it in PA so if something breaks I would be in trouble. Is there any tricks or recommendations for these bolts?

Nope. Get them out if you can w/o breaking them then replace. Unless you enjoy drilling, tapping, etc.

What drilling and tapping? He asked about the front. They are bolts, not studs. They're metric, but who cares? Replace with the nearest SAE grade 5 or grade 8, use anti-seize on the threads, and it's done.

Well my problem is once I take my truck apart and it is non drive-able I have no other way to get to the store. I work on my cars in a tiny PA town where the closest store for any parts is 45min away, and no other way to get there. So I am trying to be prepared and have the bolts before I take the old ones apart. It really s*cks because I can't do any work on my MJ unless it takes less than a long day. :fs1:

if you're adding 2 in. spacers, the factory bolts will be too short anyways, so you'll have to get new ones... 5/16 x 3 or 3&1/2 inch bolts should work for replacements, wherever you get the shocks from should have a selection of hardware...

Why can't I use my stock shocks with a 2" spacer?

please disregard the last post... apparently someone has NO clue what's going on here.

your stock shocks will work fine (or any stock replacement) with a 2" spacer. also, hardware identical or close to the hardware that you're replacing will be fine.

also, don't panic, your jeep will still be drive-able without shocks, it might not be enjoyable. but i wouldn't miss a day of work over it.

you're going to have to take loose alot of stuff to get the spring out enough to get a spacer on, might wanna pre-plan and make sure all the front end stuff is soaked in PB blaster or something good.

I have been soaking the front end the past couple of days with PB. I had most of my front end apart 6 months ago to so the bolts shouldn't be too bad. I plan on my sway bar links breaking though... :fs1:

if they get tight while backing them off run them back in and out in/out in/out, by hand tools. depending on how rusty it is that usually works, in good news, sway-bar links are only like 20$ new

New shocks usually come with new bolts for the bottom mount, but if they don't, the bolts are very common, and the parts store guy SHOULD be able to point you in the right direction for new ones. I'm thinking off the top of my head that the size might be 25-30mm long, 8mm thread with a 1.25 thread pitch. Good luck.
