kawaboy13
There is a plug-in on the front of my carb and I was wondering if anybody knew anything about it. It's the one to the right and it's called the throttle position sensor. My truck was idling about 3,000 rpms non stop so I couldn't even drive it. It'd take off and peel out and I was afraid I'd burn it up. I unplugged the electrical plug outta my throttle position sensor. And I started it, it idled up and right back down to where I want it. Did I fix my problem? Should I replace this sensor? Does anybody know if I can leave it like this or have you had the same thing happen? I found the part on jcwhitney. But if I replace that sensor and hook the electric plug back into it, will it keep doing this? Thanks in advance

kawaboy13
It is a 1987 Comanche 4x4 with the inline 4.0.
fiatslug87
You can try adjusting it first, the adjustment for the TPS is here http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/PDFs/Jeep_Renix_Fuel_Injection_manual.pdf, it's different for manual or automatic. This is also a good resource for your all your RENIX needs. BTW it's on the throttle body, the 4.0 is fuel injected, no carb.
kawaboy13
Is it alright to run my jeep without this connected?
HOrnbrod
Is it alright to run my jeep without this connected? Fiat gave you a link to test the TPS. It's a simple test; why not just check it out? A bad TPS can cause bucking/jerking, random surging of the engine when the car is idling, stalling, hesitation when accelerating, and poor mileage among other things. But if you want to run your rig like this, go for it.
bigalpha
So if you unplug the TPS and the IACV, the truck should idle lower (assuming it's idling high)? My MJ idles strangely and when I unplugged these two things, the idle didn't change.
carnuck
My '86 with 4 cyl had a crack in the MAP sensor plastic line. It revved higher than normal but it burned rubber! (black smoke out the exhaust tipped me off) It only got 8 mpg too!
