I just bought a comanche for $400. It runs crappy, and has rust, but hell $400 for a winter beater I'll take it. Now it doesn't run for a darn, its pops, sputters, backfires, then hits some kinda powerband and roaches the tires out from under me....what could be wrong? I'm thinking something with the fuel delivery???? It's not the TPS, I checked that today.

What year and what engine?

With nothing known about the vehicle, my first guess would have to be oxygen sensor. Second guess would be EGR, if you have one.

Just noticed that you have an '89. There is no Check Engine light. The only light is the Maintenance Required light, and that's run by a timer to remind you to change the O2 sensor every 80,000 miles. The light usually gets disconnected the first time it turns on, because the factory says it can't be reset and most owners don't feel like buying a new timer.

Hey sorry for the lack of info...it's got the I6 4.0 L

Not sure what's it's deal is now, all it does is click when I try to start it. I was checking the air filter today, and the plug came off the top of the valve cover (only "plug" on the valve cover, in front of the oil cap). How does it fit back on, it's full of grime and what not, but I'm not sure how it fits. Now all it does is turn over a little and click when I try to start it.....Thanks for the replies!

if it just clicks you may need to crawl underneath and give the starter a good solid THWACK with a hammer. then try.

(if the starter is the problem it should kill the batter after a while of trying.. cause it still pulls alot) at least mine does.
