Squeegy410
My brother bought an 89 cherokee laredo. he took all four doors off for summer and then got bored with it so i now have a parts jeep  i owe him some cash but that doesnt matter :rotf: anyway it is a 4wd and mines not so thats my first order of business. only problem is the doner is an automatic and i don't want an automatic so I'm guna just change the front end until i can find a transfer case or whole tranny. i don't want to change my rear end but I'm not sure if the gears are the same. they are both D44's. how do i check the ratio on my rear end? Geonovast
If you have a 4.0 with a 5 speed, sorry, but your rear axle is 3.07. The axles on that XJ are 3.55. Since they're both 44s, just swap axles. Swapping a rear will run you a set of perches, some grinding, and new U-bolts.

Eagle
wonderfull  i won't be teling the brother this :rotf: he wants the rear end i don't use for his maverick :rotf: i need a god link to a thread on how to do a 4wd conversion any help? For a Maverick? A D44? Find some Comanche Club member near you and I'll bet they'll gladly swap you a D35 for the spare D44, and you can give the D35 to your bro'. Too bad you're not closer -- I have a pile of D35s out by the shed.
carnuck
The MJ axle will be better for the car since it's already SUA. Sell the D44 for $300 and get a D35 for $50 (I got 3 of them for that and an 8.25 for $25 since they all had 3.07 no-one wanted for Jeeps)
Geonovast
The MJ axle will be better for the car since it's already SUA. I see these comments on this forum quite often and they make no sense. Just because they're both SUA does not mean it's going to simply swap in. 99% chance the distance between the perches are different. You also have to take into account overall axle width and pinion angle.
Squeegy410
he wants the d44 because its a good pos. but anyway i don't think my truck has 3.07 gears. wouldnt 3.07 be realllly long legged? because my truck isnt long legged :dunno:
mvusse
3.07 are the stock gears that came with the 4.0 and 5 speed. Cruising at 70mph in 5th should put you right around ~2100 rpm. With 3.55s you'd be doing about 2400 rpm, with 4.10 you'd be doing about 2800 rpm. And even with the 307 gears my Cherokee will easily break loose or pull a 100 foot track. On the other end of the scale I can just about hit 60 in second gear before I hit the rev limiter.
comanche12
or just remove the gears out and/or just count how many teeth on differential gear(driven) and pinion gear(drive) driven _____= X X:1 (gear ratio) drive
mvusse
Or removed the cover and turn the pinion until the side of the ring gear that has the numbers stamped into it is facing you. Two of the numbers are the teeth on the ring gear and the pinion gear. Another way is to jack up the rear and count how many revolutions of the drive shaft (just over 3, just over 3.5 or just over 4) for one revolution of both tires. Squeegy410
good deal  thanks guys  ok so with the new donor i'll have a new front axle (btw what are the options on a front axle? like d30? or what?) and i think I'm trading my rear axle from a 3.07 to a 3.55 . now all i need is transfer case for a ba 10/5 or a whole ba 10/5 with a 4wd transfer case OR (and more preferably) an ax 15 with a 4wd transfer case. any iput on how i should go about getting these? mvusse
Bolt in axles for the front are high pinion D30, low pinion D30 or low piniond D44 (TJ Rubicon). Stay away from the low pinion D30. High pinion D30 and low pinion D44 are about the same strength in the gears. They use the same shafts, unit bearings, brakes etc. High pinion 30 puts the front drive shaft up higher out of harms way with less angle in the u joints for less wear. Rubicon D44 is more money, but comes with a factory air locker and can be geared much lower, which probably will not be an issue for you. I'd go with a high pinion 30. They're cheap and plentiful. I'm just gunna use whatever is under it. anyone got pics of the different front axles? preferably so i can see what the difference is in the pinions
