You have an AW4, and you need a 4wd AW4 to make your truck 4wd. Converting a 2wd trans to a 4wd trans, especially any automatic, is time consuming, costly, and by the time you're done, you'd have pretty much bought a 4wd trans anway.

Ok so if ifind a loaner truck in the yard, I can remove the aw4 tranny and and transfer case and axels etc, and bolt them up behind my engine?

Yes, but you have to grab all the parts around the 4wd

 

Don't forget the shifter & linkage for 4wd

so you can't just, remove the tail housing from your 2wd aw4, and put the transfercase on the aw4 tranny, and collect the rest of the 4x4 parts needed??

Buy a 4x4 Cherokee, swap drivetrains and sell the now 2wd Cherokee, or just part it out. If you're smart you'll actually make money in that process.

Nope.

Unlike old Chevy trans, the AW4 and AX-15 and AX-5 need the output shaft AND the tail cone swapped to make 2wd to 4wd. This requires taking the transmission apart from the front and pulling the output shaft (it goes in through the back of the trans case) to do it. Miteaswell rebuild the trans while you are at it.
