How do you tell what gears you have if there is no tag and the owner will not let me take the cover off. I think it is a 1988 can't read the door tag or vin. Also i have a hp dana 30 would it be best to keep this or change over to other axel if it has 4 10. 1988 is a 2.5 5 speed 4x4. thanks

an 88 CAD axle is going to be tough if the owner won't let you pop the cover. If he would let you pop the CAD cover you could engage the CAD and then spin the disk brakes around and count the pinion rotations.

2.5/5spd should have gotten 4.10s from the factory.

The truck is sitting on blocks no wheels. I can turn the disk brakes and watch pinion turn just don't know how to tell by turning rotor and watching pinion. I did turn tonight pinion went around 2 times to the rotors 1. If that helps. thanks

It was not engaged. Just spinned rotor and pinion turned. If thay are 4 10 could i change over everything from hp 30 to this axel or would i be better of saving my money and getting 4 10 in hp

If he will not let you pull the cover walk away and tell him to sell it to someone else, or offer to buy him a tube of RTV so he can put it back on after.

NEVER buy an axle without pulling the cover and checking things out. I would be out over 500 dollars and would own at least 3 worthless axles right now if I had not insisted on pulling the cover.

One axle I found for sale on CL with 4.10s and a locker, had nearly 1/8" of backlash somehow, shims were hillbilly jammed between the bearing cups and the housing instead of between the bearing cones and carrier, amazing amount of side play in the carrier, no carrier preload at all, etc. Gears were worn in a strange way. Would have been out $250 right there.

The other two were less money but still worthless.

A d35 I got (for free from a local member) turned out to be worthless as an axle, about ten teeth of the ring gear were so badly rusted it couldn't even turn past the pinion, but I didn't care because I only wanted it for the yoke, shafts, and carrier as spares. When I turned it a pinion rotation or two it seemed fine because it wasn't on the rusted portion, had I paid money for it I would have been pretty displeased when I got home!

Any time a seller ups the price on me I walk away from it, no matter how bad I wanted it. As to what it's worth, your going to have to decide that. We can't see the truck. You can. Carefully inspect it, especially for rust. Pull covers, mats. He won't let you pull, walk away. Try to figure out what you can sell parts for that you won't be using. What will be the value of the the parts to you that you will be using. If there's no rust and the axles are good it's worth $300. But I'd still walk away from it just because he raised the price. There's a 50/50 chance he'll not sell it to anybody and will be dropping the price back to the original figure. Jim

Parts that are good front and rear axels, transfercase, rear driveshaft, header panel with all side markers, hood, tail lights. both side glass. The bad all rusted out floores bed cab. I still need to fined out what gears are in it if i can get him to let me open front diff were would it be marked for gear ratio.

walk away and tell him where he can put it.

300 for a front axle is ridiculous especially after playing bait and switch. Especially after not letting you pull the cover to inspect.

I can get dana 30s for 100-130 all day long around here... mostly with 3.55s and some 3.07s but once in a long while a 4.10 shows up. Play the waiting game, don't go with the sleazy seller's plan.

It's $300 for the whole truck, not just the 30.

There will be no markings. You will have to count the teeth on the gears. Number of teeth on ring gear.

43=3.31

46=3.54

41=3.73

37=4.11

The tooth counts are stamped on the ring gear, and some ratios had the same number of teeth on the ring. 4.10 has 41/10. 3.73 has 41/11

No, the ratio will be stamped into the edge of the ring gear.

It is unusual not to find a ratio tag on a front axle. I've looked at old XJs and MJs that were sunk right up to the pumpkin in muddy fields behind old barns and still found the tag intact.
