johnj92131
Right now, I am looking at a way to have a bumper mounted spare tire on my Commanche. The Cherokee tire carrier mounted to the body is not a good solution. I see a number of Cherokee Bumper mounted tire carriers that swing away. Including a Jeep factory one for the Cherokee. These seem to require a major reinforcement for the stock bumper. Has anyone done anything like this? Appreciate any information/thoughts you may care to share. jpnjim
This is a very interesting thread. Not about the complaints, as such. But we should think about what very small market the MJ truck really is. And most of us are Cheap Skates. Not knocking anyone. Just trying to be realistic. John Jackson I'm not a fan of rear tire carriers on pickups, but this style isn't bad, because it's reversible. http://www.truckcandy.com/TC/TireGate/TireGate.htm Looks like $$ tho, and not sure it can be adapted to an MJ. You should start a new thread for the question tho. :D

Either have it swing away or swing down and out of the way: If you were to use your stock bumper, you could just make up something simple and bolt it on the other side of the bumper bracket for support. If that be the case, you could probably use off the shelf trailer spare tire carriers and make them work too as a common trailer bolt pattern is 5"x4.5". Incommando
Many online fabrication parts suppliers offer spindles, latches, etc... to help with a tire carrier fab..

Like the idea of using common trailer spare tire carrier. Lots of them and prices are very reasonable. Just want to ask how you would strengthen the stock bumper? I like what I see in JCR's rear supports for the heavy duty rear bumper. Still think a swing away would be best...thinking about adding a second gas tank and an eventual diesel conversion. But that is a couple of years away. JJ BTW I have a good bolted on factory accessory hitch installed in 1991.
ParadiseMJ
Sorry if I'm missing something here but the whole of that tire's wind/weight resistance is supported by that little pin?? Seems kind of weak, seems like it would rattle. The carrier looks fine but is there a stop somewhere in case that pin gives out? Is there a stouter pin set-up?? The way that I'd do it is to add the carrier directly on the other side of the bumper bracket as it'll help with the bumper flexing around when you swing the tire away. Then, whatever type of plate you use for the outside with the swinging assembly, make up another one for the backside that "sandwiches" the bumper and run your bolts through the whole works. The pictures that I put up were during the mock-up stange and I added a stop later on.
beepbeepmyredjeep
I'm considering installing one of these on my factory bumper... http://www.harborfreight.com/5000-lb-ca ... 67158.html Then adding one of these... http://www.autopartsdealer.com/reese_hi ... 624-p.html Only downside is, I'll have to remove the spare to open the tailgate. BUT, I don't haul very often with my MJ anymore.
