Question on my 4x4 upgrade.

Recommended Posts

OK,

So I sourced a 4x4 MJ as a donor to my 1988 4x2 MJ. I'm planning on using the front and rear axles, driveshafts, and transfer case. Since the donor car has 130K+ miles on it, is there anything I should look at replacing while the swap takes place? Should I rebuild anything? Should I be replacing bushing or anything? Thanks in advance.

Also, does anyone know the spline count on a stock transfer case from a 1988 4x4 is 21 or 23? Thanks.

If the tranny is manual, I would replace the clutch components (especially the slave if it's internal). You could also replace the CPS and keep the old one as a spare, since you'll have easy access to it.

If the engine is a 2.5L, you might think about replacing the RMS....it only costs about $5. Unlike the 4.0, you HAVE to pull the tranny/flywheel to replace it...no better time than now. Also, there is an expansion plug in the rear of the block, below the head, that you might want to check the condition of and replace if it looks bad. Here's a pic of it, it's a bit past 12 o'clock, partially covered by the flywheel.

HTH,

Jeff

These 2 MJs have the same engine, yes?

Both cars are 1988 MJ's with the 4.0.

The donor car is an Automatic, mine is a manual.

My plan is to use a newer NV3550 from a 2000 XJ (23 spline, right?) and an NP242 from something else for the full-time 4x4 option. I need to make sure I get a 23 spline NP242 to match the NV3550. Is there an easy way to search for one of these? For instance, are all NP242's 23 spline after a certain year?

Also, is the NP231 that's in my donor truck a 21 or 23 spline?

Thanks.

all HO t-cases will have a 23 spline input.

87-90 AW4 t-cases were 21 spline.

I believe that even the puegot had a 23 spline output, I know that all AX-15 trans were 23 spline output.

Excellent info. So it looks like as long as I get a 1991 or newer NP242 it should mate up with an NV3550, right? Thanks again!

Ds may not work off donor since your not useing that exact setup (could be longer or shorter. Also $800 sounds high to me but i did everything to mine myself so i really don't know about that. If I was you and of course I'm not I would find someone close to you (like Shaw AFB or something) ;) And put everything in that bolts right up one weekend and then get the rest done up at a shop or by another good buddy that might have the means to do it. just my 2 jingles of sense. Then you can take that $800 buy a couple  for your buddys who helped and do more to the MJ to make it how you want. Good luck on your decision.

I don't understand what you mean by Ds not working... What are Ds? (Please don't say Ds nuts...)

Probably. But I always make the parts boys check what tranny it actually is ment for... They can look it up if they aren't daft.

Oh, and Ds, or DS, or D/S means driveshafts!

Gotcha... If the NP242 is going to be too big of a pain, I'll just use the NP231 and change out the input shaft... That shouldn't be too hard, should it?

Ok Ill explain why i metioned Drive shaft issues....Let say your current setup contains A transmission and transfer case the in total legnth are 48"s. K now you swap them both out with a different type from a different vehicle. The replacements have a possibility of being different lengths so lets say they are 45"s long. Now you have 3" you have to make up for in D/S length. Now i don't know alot about the tranny you are going with but It is possible its of different legnths. Sorry for the long discription but i wanted to make sure you got what i was saying fully. ;)

the NV3550 is the same length as a BA10... less than an inch off.

(i was gonna do the swap)

but i know an auto tranny will need a longer front d/s.

242 shouldnt matter for the front d/s and should only change the rear a little bit... both cases are similar in size i beleive.
