Clutch or transmission?

Put a ax15 in where my ba/10 was. Put new clutch, pressure plate, slave cylinder, and pilot bearing in too. Tranny will shift into third fourth fifth and reverse with truck off but with truck running and in neutral it will not go into gear and grinds if i try and put it in reverse. If i put in third gear with truck off then start it i can hear something that sounds like the clutch and flywheel rubbing. Any ideas

Clutch isn't disengaging. First thing I would suspect is you may have not put it back together correctly. Second thing i would suspect is a bad part. Since it was working B4 I feel that eliminates the master cyl, but leaves the slave cyl, throwout bearing and pressure plate. You just about have to disassemble it again to find out. Unfortunately just because somethings new doesn't mean it's good.

Unfortunately i think i need to take it apart too. :wall:

 

How could i tell if its a 89,90, or 91 model ax15? The pilot bushing was for a 89-90 model but if its a 91 i would need a diff bushing. Would that have any issue with it?

 

I just don't know why it won't go into 1st or 2nd gear :dunno:

Do you know the AX15 was good B4 installing it? With the engine off and the clutch depressed you should be able to shift into all gears. Shifting into the lower gears with the motor running is almost if not impossible.

Could it not be bled correctly. Is there any play in the clutch pedal

:oops: well got it off a buddy who said he pulled it from a good xj i took his word and now I'm paying for it. I got it and tcase for $175 so i was thinking if it needed work i still have less than $500 in whole thing.

 

I've bled about a whole bottle of fluid thru it. Pedal feels good.

 

I got a exedy clutch, pressure plate, and pilot bearing as a kit for the 89-90 model ax15. What differences would there be if the ax15 was a 91 model. Could my flywheel need turned?

the pilot bushing needs to fit the input shaft, so if its the right diameter for the input shaft and it fits/stays in the block then you're good.

 

the disc only goes one way so pull it out and check that you have it installed the correct side to the flywheel.

Do NOT have the flywheel turned.

 

The factory service manual specifically says the flywheel has a proprietary contour and CANNOT be resurfaced.

So is there a secret way to bleed the slave or is it like the brake system?

Here is some wisdom.

 

 

I winched out my old BA, cause it was stuck on there REAL good. In Doing so, I mashed my first/second selector fork where it connects to the shifter (inside the tranny). I took the back side of the transmission off and quickly fixed the problem with a pair of pliers and am wheeling with the same tranny now, with no issues, except I forgot to put the damn oil seal on.

 

I am not too sure about the AX15, but I do know that it comes apart one way or another, grab yourself some gear oil and a compresser and give that thing a cleaning on the inside it deserves. While your taking it off and checking things out check your clutch rig too, make sure thats all good to go. If something doesn't feel right when your rippin it apart, chances are, its not. Who knows, maybe you didn't torque something properly, could be a little thing, don't panic. Not yet.

Unfortunately the weather has been crappy here and my jeep is outside so hopefully i can get to it some time this week

with the motor off. get a friend to rock the truck back and forth while pushin it in first. some times the gears arnt lined up. if it still won't go in first then i would wonder about the state of the tranny. could still be a clutch issue tho.

you know i never tried that. It has been sittin up on ramps the whole time i been tryin to work shifter. I will def give that a try. right now it sucks that its been raining for four days straight.
