dasbrick Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 What tools are needed for a starter replacement? Renix 4.0/BA-10/5... When I did a Venture I needed some really whacked out sizes like 19/32 and such.. But Jeep kept it simple... right?
Eagle Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 Wrong. You'll need two wrench sizes to remove the two wires from the starter (IIRC), and the two bolts holding the starter to the engine are not the same size. The good news is that everything is pretty easily accessible.
dasbrick Posted February 16, 2010 Author Posted February 16, 2010 thats what I'm wondering. if someone knows the wrench sizes... :)
Akula69 Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 I want to say that the two bolts are a 15MM and a 13MM. The main battery wire is a 13MM, and the secondary wire is a 10MM. (at least on my truck!)
dasbrick Posted February 16, 2010 Author Posted February 16, 2010 More then likely I have the same ones then, since I have an 87 as well. But that helps out ALOT since I can make sure I have all my tools together BEFORE i get under there and go
dasbulliwagen Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 Just did one today on a ZJ, 15mm and 13mm for the starter bolts, but 13mm and 8mm for the electric connection.
dasbrick Posted February 17, 2010 Author Posted February 17, 2010 Got a bead on a boneyard starter, for $35. came out of a 98 XJ 4.0... Anyone had any luck with the boneyard starters? or should I just suck it up and pay the 70 bucks for a new one from Advanced?
Akula69 Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 Ah, I don't really like the electrical stuff from the JY (like alternators and starters) unless they offer some sort of warranty (my local Pick-and-pull will warrant a part for about $2-3 more). I suppose it would also depend on how the donor looked....if the engine bay was relatively clean and well maintained you might be able to assume the electrical components were at least operable when it got there... of course...there has to be a reason why it's there as well
Oizarod115 Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 if its a cash for clunkers jeep then definitely go for it

jimoshel Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 I rebuild my own starters and alternators, generators. A dying art it seems. However when I go to a JY if I see a nice shiny new component with the sticker still on it I will get it.
dasbrick Posted February 18, 2010 Author Posted February 18, 2010 Both body mounts: 14mm. Electrical: 13mm and 9/32"
johnnybebad Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 nothing wrong with a junkyard starter, i`ve had one on my XJ for 2 years now. most of the time jeep starters only suffer from a bad brush assembly. they are pretty easy to replace and i think around $25 new
