don't know if this should be in here or the pub, but i have the chance to buy a chryco 8.25 out of a 94 XJ with 4.10's real cheap. I'm looking at an MJ that is lifted, but has a welded 35 :ack:. the 8.25 needs brakes but i was planning on putting stronger shafts in it an a locker. I know to look for a 29 spline, but if i'm gonna rebuild it it really isn't too much of a problem Just wonderin if this seems like a good plan

yea my XJ has the 8.25 an its pretty tough, an since i can get it pretty cheap an its probly 10 minutes from me, seems pretty worth it.

I've read various write-ups, articles, and posts that say the 8.25 isn't much stronger than the D35. I can't bring any numbers to the discussion, but I've been pretty tough on my '01 XJ with the 8.25 rear end. It's approaching 170K miles and I'm starting to get a hint that the gears might be getting a little 'loose,' but it could also be that my transmission mount is crapping the bed. I'll be doing a fluid change on the 8.25 pretty soon so I can do a closer inspection then. On the flip side, I've been through two D35's on my '89 MJ although my D35 on my '88 is the original and is still going...

It's been said that the 27 spline 8.25 isn't much stronger than the 35... but that's really only in reference to the shafts.

I've never heard of problems with the gears or carrier, and the 8.25 has a massive housing with extremely generous 3" axle tubes, which, IIRC, are actually bigger than the 44's tubes.

The 29 spline versions are nearly as strong as a 44. 27 and 29 spline 8.25s are identical except for the shafts, carriers, and spider gears.

I myself just picked up a 3.55 29 spline 8.25 for $25.

A D35 actually has a larger diameter shaft than a 27 spline 8.25" shaft. Both are 27 spline.

8.25" all had c-clip axles. I'd prefer a non c-clip axle myself...

8.25" also does not use shims (threaded collar) that you have to have a special tool (or make one yourself) to adjust. Thus making the job of gear changes and/or locker installs more difficult.

Personally I'd take a early D35 (non c-clip) axle over a 27 spline 8.25" anyday. Now the 29 spline 8.25" on the other hand is a good upgrade.

I think it makes gear and locker installation much easier. No need to worry about shims or set up bearings. There really is no need for any special tools. A hammer and punch can easily be used to adjust the collars.

my plan was to run the 35 till it essentially blows up, then have the 8.25 there to swap in. I was plannin on putting stronger after market shafts in it, and a locker eventually. Just looking to have an axle to swap in cause i know its a matter of time before the 35 gives up the ghost
