No "sponsors". I don't mind if anyone cuts you guys a break, but I do not need those kinds of headaches. I'd rather stay broke. but if we can find another way, we'll look into it.

I don't know how to set up a "donation button" on this forum software :dunno: , but I figured out how to set up a new email account for donations. :typing:

the paypal account is: comancheclub@hotmail.com

and yes I'm proud that I figured that out all on my own. :clapping:

the problem with donations/sponsors, as Pete has explained to me before, is that they then get a "piece of the pie". Most places won't consider sponsoring unless they're in control enough to regulate when and where their ads will be located.

At the moment, Pete is the sole owner of Comanche Club, and therefore "dictates" what goes on with this site, when, and where...things such as what type of website this is, whether vbulletin or otherwise. With sponsors (such as offroad parts manufacturers), you loose a bit of the control you had before...they can suggest switching to non-free forum software etc. and if you don't, they can pull the plug on donations. You'd have to make them aware of forum changes before they happen...

the list goes on. it just complicates things.

I say we keep donations from group members ONLY. no parts distributors etc..

I offered to personally donate a full Vbulletin license, a couple times for Pete, and he declined, a couple times. I think the Forum software is far superior to the PHPbb, but like mentioned, it's Pete's show and there is something positive to be said for not having to listen to people with a financial "stake" in the "business". I don't know that anyone gets "rich" off of running a forum, but I'm guessing between Membership fees, Advertising Fees , etc, it would more than pay for the forum software/time and effort.

I have no problem with an annual donation - as a matter of fact this is one of the only forums that I would do for.

I agree with Pete that the forum should stay advertisement free...it gets really annoying having the ads scroll on the screen (of have a pop-up try and take over).

vbulletin is great if you know how to use it properly, but this board is great for "self-employed" guys like Pete.

I hate sounding like a broken record here, but using the Internet since it became public, I have seen what sponsorship does to boards. There are typically two scenarios:

1) most common....the board needs money, decides to raise it by sponsorship, and then loses control because it is afraid (or can't) lose that cash flow. Board dies out because it is no longer the same board, or it can't support itself any more...or both.

2) maybe something like .5% fit here.....the board is run as a full business, and is so successful that sponsors NEED the board, and can be made to jump through hoops to ft the board, or they get dropped.

I was a veteran mod on a board for another hobby one time. The board was much like this, catering to the general masses. Lots of group buys, saving others lots of money for the members. Then the sponsors arrived, and when a forum member not associated with a business in any way set up a group buy for a $199 item as opposed to the same item the sponsors were selling for $279, they shut it down and had it removed in order to keep from looking bad. The board took the side of the sponsors, instead of the members. I took issue with it, and when I was told we couldn't afford to lose the sponsorships - I left. In no way, shape or form was I going to be associated with something that was completely against the principles on which the board was founded. Worst part was the guy who ran it seemed to be a great guy like our fearless leader here. I think he just backed him into a corner he couldn't buy himself out of. :dunno:

 thanks guys.

All monies donated will go to fees, stickers, aka something ComancheClub related. I'm currently snagging a couple MJ brochures off of ebay. photos will be up as soon as I receive them.

Pete's what's your PayPal Addy? I could use a few Magnets if you have any extra... I sent 3 out with the E-bay stuff I sold last week.

Also, which brochures are you getting. If you have a Scanner Bigger than 8.5x11, I'd be happy to loan you the 86, 88 and 89 Jeep Book (I did so-so scans of the 89 a month or so ago).

the new paypal ID is: comancheclub@hotmail.com

I'm getting an 86 Jeep/eagle accessories brochure and a FourWheeler article that was made into a brochure to hand out at dealerships. when I get them, I'll have every MJ dealership brochure that I know of. :D I don't scan them anymore though. I've found that the digi camera produces a much better picture than my scanner. :dunno:

PayPal Sent.... I'd be interested in hearing more about your pic taking technique/setup (tripod?) for these old brochures and stuff

the key is to use lots of ambient light. no flash. using a tripod and the camera's timer would definitely help with eliminating any shakiness. Use the Macro setting if the camera has one (helps with close up images). Remember that you can crop the images afterwords, but rotating is much harder.

( still using dial-up )

whats dial-up? :dunno:

my memory is real hazy :chillin: ....

1996 isn't that far back.....It's what you used with Trumpet Winsock, Windows 3.1, TCPMAN.EXE to connect to GOPHER and burrow through the internet and/or to retrieve files with FTP.

All you youngsters who have no clue what I am talking about, take note.....this is what you sound like when you type on here the same way you text your "homies."
