case5412 Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 Is a NP205 from a 1979 F250 a good transmission for my 92 MJ? A guys parting the truck I want to get parts I need. :dunno:
redneck23ms Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 np205 is a transfer case not a transmission. a 205 is a good strong t-case. its only downfalls are its very heavy and it only has a 2:1 low range.

Oh, should I buy it? What transmission is in it? I bet he just looked under it and saw a number and gave it to me.
beaterjeep Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 What transmission is in it? As with anything else, that depends on if it's a manual or automatic, which motor is in front of it, and any other pertinent options that could help determine what trans it has.
WBKrazy Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 a 205 is a very stout t-case, but i don't think it will work in an mj without some kind of adapter to mate it to the jeep transmission....
Pete M Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 I'd much prefer the NP-231 that comes in a Jeep to the 205. That thing weighs infinite pounds and has a crappy low range ratio. Mate it to the manual trans of that era and you'll be doubling that infinity. I had the pair that came out of my 78 Bronco and there's no freaking way I was going to even try to support that kind of weight in my truck. :ack: It sounds good on paper, but sucks in real life.

If you need a transmission, don't buy a transfer case.
JeepcoMJ Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 combining an np205 transfercase with an np203 t-case nets 4:1 crawl ratio
case5412 Posted December 3, 2009 Author Posted December 3, 2009 Yep I'll be sticking to MJ/XJ transmissions and transfer cases I guess.
Geonovast Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 combining an np205 transfercase with an np203 t-case nets 4:1 crawl ratio After all the work of combining them, and especially if they really weigh infinity, you'd be better off just installing a 4:1 kit in a 231.
