GATOR88 Posted November 30, 2009 Posted November 30, 2009 yep i destroied the right front hub in the clay it just broke loose on me :wall: so now i have an excuse to put quarter locking hubs in her it will be a hell of a lot better then automatic hubs i think :brows:
CWLONGSHOT Posted November 30, 2009 Posted November 30, 2009 Our MJ's don't have a selectable "hub" like a FS chevy or ford PU does. (if you talking about a selectable hub, like a warn or select a-matic) You will either have a CAD or your axle will be engaged all the time. The D30 does have a UNIT bearing. Is this what your speaking of? I am not familiarly with the terminology, "quarter locking hubs ". Can you clarify? If you want to add selectable hubs (like a FS cheby or ford) to your d30 axle there are really only two options, neither is cheap. Warn makes a kit for about a grand. There is another company but for the life of me I cannot remember the name. IIRC its not available anylonger anyway. CW

That is correct!!!  CRS sux.... CW
GATOR88 Posted December 1, 2009 Author Posted December 1, 2009 yes cw selectable hubs :fool: in the south we call them quarter lockers
Pete M Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 But would they actually be stronger? I mean, they have way more moving parts in them. Ours aren't even "automatic" hubs, they are fixed. Can't get a much stronger design than that. If you're breaking unit bearings, then you may need to step up to a stronger axle. :dunno:
redneck23ms Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 i'm in the south and never heard anybody call them quarter lockers :dunno: to me the selectable hub conversions are way too much money. i'd just put a new unit bearing on there and keep wheeling.
Eagle Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 Warn makes (or used to make) two versions of the conversion, Mile Marker only has one. The Warn conversion that maintains the 5x4-1/2" bolt circle is not especially strong. The Mile Marker is roughly equivalent to the weaker Warn conversion. The stronger Warn conversion requires changing over to a 5x5-1/2" bolt circle and a lot of machine work, it isn't a bolt-on conversion. Although I agree that the Cherokee and Comanche should have come from the factory with selectable (not automatic) hubs, there's no way either conversion will be stronger than the stock setup if you retain the 5 x 4-1/2" bolt pattern. Save your money and start saving for a stronger axle. Just to reiterate, Gator, you do not have automatic hubs. The hubs on the MJ Dana 30 are just hub/bearing units. There's no locking mechanism in there to break. If you broke it, you broke the bearing (or the housing).
GATOR88 Posted December 1, 2009 Author Posted December 1, 2009 well eventually i am going to up grade to 1 tons (axles)
CWLONGSHOT Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 well eventually i am going to up grade to 1 tons (axles) ALL the more reason NOT to dump over a grand into your D30!!! :wall: JMHO, CW
Blue XJ Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 I picked up the Warn locking hub conversion for my D30 for a heck of a deal from a guy local to me. It seems like a decent kit, it makes the weak point the axle hub, so hopefully no more broken ujoints/shafts. I have only broke 1 hub so far, but for $40 its cheaper to replace than the axle shaft. However, if I didn't get the deal that I did, I wouldn't have spent the money on that kit. I had other issues that led me to wanting manual hubs. And just to brag a little. I picked up a D30 with 4.56's, ARB, warn alloy shafts, warn hub conversion kit, 760 ujoints, an extra set of brake rotors and braided brake lines for $700!!! :D

It had a central axle disconnect, driven by a gas filled cylinder with a heating coil. Nothing like driving through deep snow, or crossing a creek and having your front axle disengage due to the cylinder retracting. TSB called for replacement with an linear actuator.
