case5412
Well, I'm setting out my plan on paper then I will aquire the parts and begin building. Engine, Tranny, Axles, Tires. :rotfl2: I need a good choice for a turbo diesel engine swap. I was thinking the inline 6s from the old dodges. I'm going to make my build a little bigger than most, with higher torque and bigger tires. Budget is normal to low, I'm only barely insane. I'll be basing the tranny on the engine and so on. I have hardly any experience so please leave me a lot of reading material, thanks. :rotfl2: What do yall think about DIESEL ENGINE DONORS??? :hmm: :hmm: :hmm: :hmm: :hmm:
dasbulliwagen
Theres only one thing to say about diesel engine swaps into an MJ.... EXPENSIVE!!!! The cummins 6 cyl is way to big to fit into an MJ without EXTENSIVE cab and unibody modification. And the axles needed for what you want will need extensive modification to work under an MJ. If you have little to no experience and few tools, and by tools I mean welder, sheet metal brake, plasma cutter, air compressor and wide selection of air tools, then this is not a project for you. I know it would be soo cool to do, but if you are on a strict small budget I can tell you that this is not going to happen. There are people ou there that have done a cummins 4 cyl swap, but again, it is extremely hard to do and requires tons of fab work. And it is really hard to find a 4cyl cummins donor... and if you do find one running, expect to pay more that 5 grand just for the motor... USED! Unless you have a ton of resources like a family owned truck junkyard with an attached metal shop, I don't see this happening. I hate to burst your bubble, but you need to be realistic about this, maybe build up an early first gen dodge cummins single rear wheel 3/4 or 1 ton. Then you can keep the MJ nice for around town or easier wheelin. Whatever you decide to do, we wish you luck and will be here to help you any way we can. Good luck! dasbulliwagen
And let us know what the build date is on your truck... I see its a 92... some of us chrysler mechanics could tell you the exact day and hour it was made, and what options it originally came with and where it was originally sold. Post the last 9 digits of your VIN and I can get the info for you! Or you can PM them to me and Ill look it up!

A lot of headache and money and stress that is not worth it. Yeah it would be cool, but I am seeing how hard it would be. I'll have 13 months to get the truck where I want it and the Diesel engine is seeming impossible, well at least for me and for the time I'll have. I leaning more to building one frame up, in a couple of years. I would still like to see the Diesel engine builds, they would be cool to check out. Guess for this build I'll go the practicle route, seeing it's my first build and this is a brand new hobbie for me. I dream big and I will build one in a heart beat, if I only had the resources.       I'll post up my VIN and MR Date tomorrow, I'm hitting the hay tonight. mvusse
He's a member on here, and wheels it at JeepSkool occasionally. Met him once there. Even a 4BT is not an easy fit. He had to cut a hole in his hood to clear a second turbo when he went to a twin turbo set up. Transplanting a CRD out of a Liberty might be a though also, but with 13 months to get it done, I think you'd better forget about doing a diesel unless you have lots of spare time, and enough money to keep the build going without a break. A stock Comanche can handle that part, as I have done it when mine was still stock. Stock Cherokee also. I don't think he pushes it too hard, and I don't blame him. If my truck looked like that I'd be afraid of scratches, pin stripes and dings as well. I do push my truck, and it shows. I had to replace the driver's door 'cause it got too badly damaged, but before that I drove around with a big dent and scratch in it. Replaced both side mirrors twice now. I have dents in every part of the body including the roof and the frame, and the rear bumper looks like a pretzel. Some of those dents actually have names... Megadan
How much power do you want? How complicated or expensive do you want to swap to be? The 4bt cummins, while viable, is a very large and heavy engine(800lbs) that requires at least 5-6" of lift to be a truly viable option as it's an incredibly tall motor. stock they make OK power and torque, and being entirely mechanical means they are easy to install. The real issue comes down to the driveline (after all the previous is taken care of) as the stock AX-15 will be ok behind a stock 4bt and even a mild one, but at the 200hp level they start putting out well over 500lb-ft.The Mercedes Diesels are nice. not too heavy and run nice. They have the downsides of being not that fuel efficient, especially for a diesel, and can get rather expensive rather quickly. Depending on where you live they may not be the easiest to find either. My personal favorite, and eventual planned swap is something much smaller than either, a 1999-2003 VW 1.9TDI/ Before you laugh consider it weighs 180lbs less than the jeep 4.0L. And it is not a space hog like the other two. While it is electronic (complicated) there are some resources out there that really explain the wiring for swaps. It's stock power output is not overwhelming (90hp and 155lb-ft) they are easy to hop up and can push about 150hp on a stock turbo, and near 200hp with a small upgrade while making at or over 300lb-ft. without reliability being a concern. Will it be fast? No, but with upgrades it will at least be as peppy as a stock 4.0 and even a mild stroker. The real advantage is lightniss and fuel econ. Most swapped pickups (Toyotas) average 30-38mpg. There is a company that sells a complete adapter setup with flywheel and other parts for a decent price too. The best part, IMHO, is that it would work perfectly with the gearing already used with the 4.0L because they operate across a 5000rpm rev range. In any case, if you are after huge torque to impress your buddies, obviously the little 1.9 TDi isn't for you, but considering Jeep put a 2.1L 4cyl diesel in these trucks once, it's not too far off the mark. buckwheat
I would be interested in any links you have to more info. I know of the Coty motor swap, but that is rather expensive. Although 30+ mpg sounds awesome.
johnj92131
If you want more information on the VW TDI swap into a Jeep, check out the TDIClub TDI conversions section: http://forums.tdiclub.com/forumdisplay.php?f=63 Lots of jeep conversions there as well as a ton of Toyota truck TDI conversions, and lots of others. My 96 Passat TDI puts out 162 hp and 285 lb/ft with just larger injectors, a bit bigger - but stock turbo and a chip tune. I got 45 mpg on a 9700+mile cross country trip in September. Oh, and I detuned the engine from 172 hp and 313 lb/ft of torque just to keep the smoke down.
johnj92131
The other engine you might want to look at would be the 2.5 diesel found in Jeeps in Europe. This is NOT the Renault diesel, rather built by VM and is a close relative of the 2.8 diesel sold here in the 2005-6 Liberty. The good thing about this engine is the factory has done all the engineering for you if you import one of these with the trans and everything. About as close to bolt in as you will get with a diesel swap. Not saying cheap or easy. Just saying all the factory parts are in europe and sold by by Jeep.
