ffjosh
I am new to the Jeep scene but not to off road completely. I am moving out and need a off road rig (to have fun) something to haul fire wood and possibly drive in the winter if needed (already have a truck) I am looking for something in the $500 range, something that runs and goes, but needs work. I have a tube bender, welder ect so modifications can be done easily. I found a couple MJs, and this one stands out because its close to me and cheap. Looks like it was a mud truck, which does not bother me too much. Wonder if you all could tell me what to look for, what kind of deal you think it is compared to other MJs? Are these MJs have good potential? I would like to put a D44 35s or 37s and coils under what ever I buy eventually. here is the link http://southbend.craigslist.org/cto/1454107770.html
freakjeep93
it looks like a good buy if its partially rust free and works but youll need a box and bumpers and a header panel if you want it look half decent. my self id buy it and fix it up but others on the site may disagree
Eagle
I've bought complete trucks in equal or better condition for $200. What are you going to haul wood in? As noted, you'll need a box. Good luck finding one. About the only good thing there is that clearance for big tires won't be a problem in the rear. I wouldn't even consider this one, but I like to keep MJs as complete and original as possible. If you would be chopping it up anyway, then by all means chop on this one. dunl
We have issues finding rigs up here simply because of the low population base, so there are less of them and they are more expensive than down in the states. Even so, I'd pass on this one, as there should be better ones out there somewhere. :)

Dave Stark
If you want to haul fire wood the MJ is probably not the truck for you, as it is fairly small. You might consider getting an old Power Wagon or J truck or even dare i say...chevy. :dunno: Also that truck looks dangerous, if you have any intentions of driving it on-road i would go through EVERYTHING, which would be very expensive... 1990 Pioneer 4x4
I see rust in the rockers; I’ll bet you’ll find it in the floor pans as well. A rig looking that rough, you would need to wonder how bad they beat the motor…? If you have the time, ability, and resources and really want the truck; offer em $250. ffjosh
For as much wood as I will haul it would maybe be enough to fit in the back of a rhino. I live in a woods and just need to be able to go out cut up a few down trees and bring it back. As far as having a bed? I don't need one, just a tube back half with maybe a small net type basket for wood/cooler on trips. The mud pits here are normal mud. We have a mud pit that has competitions every month or so. Its just thick goo. Not a water pit like most. So I don't think it would have gotten anything into the engine. For some reason I would rather buy a mud truck then a trail truck just knowing what we have done lol. Not to sound like a @$$ but I would like to hear from people who offroad there MJs and not care about some body damage. Looks are not that important to me as I will be tubing most I am going to take this in the woods, down trails and probably bust it up. This would be my first trail truck as I am used to quads and UTVs. My friend built his ranger and I have so much fun riding with him down the trails. I want to buy something cheap first and then if I like it maybe buy a nice rig down the road. I am looking at everything from Mjs to Ford High boys Here is a few pics of my friends truck....he is teaching me some fab skills as I only know the basics
Pete M
Need more info on the truck. how many miles? noises? etc. I've seen overpriced basketcases and underpriced trucks in need of some TLC. Hard to say which that is based on his tiny ad. :dunno: Nice work by the way.
87Warrior
I would have to say that MJ is not worth the $600. It would be a good candidate for fabrication as you posted though. There was an '88 4.0, D44, 150K miles truck down the road from me that sold for $250 plus another $250 for a winch. Bed was rusty but the rest of the truck was solid. I missed buying it by 3 hours
dunl
I'm just saying.....hold off and see if you can find a better rig, even if you are going to use it for trails. :)
glundblad
I live out that way and have seen that truck in person. You can find a lot better truck than that for $600. There is not much there. Also, I should warn you that if you buy an MJ around the Ft Wayne/South Bend area, it won't last long if you drive it in the winter. The salt will eat it up. ffjosh
Thanks for the responses. I have no more details on it as they have not called me back. I found another one that looks a lot more solid but they won't call me back or email me either :fs1: I don't plan on driving it on the road, only if I had to. Which when we go wheeling at the dunes we have to drive roughly 2 miles down the road to get to the entrance.

Thanks for the heads up. What do you mean not much there? The frame all rusty? If it has not sold and has a solid frame I was going to offer them $250 and see what happends. If its a rust bucket then I am stepping away. I found quit a few in my area, I just can't get anyone to call or email back. I have a guy with a Jeep wrangler for cheap too that I am going to look at. LEAD_NOT_FOLLOW
I've seen it in person as well. Dave's had it for quiet awhile now. Dave is always willing to deal, so make him an offer on it. He's located back by the airport in Warsaw, just show up some day and he'll happily show you around. If your looking for a project I have an '86 LWB that has very minimal rust (small hole in the floor) I'd part with for cheap.
