CRF136N
I would be biting, had I accepted an employment offer given to me last year when I was up there. I tried so hard to finalize things, I even came crazy close to buying an xj when I was there to have transportation until I moved everything else up there...but I was only there for 2 weeks, and the job offer came the 2nd to last day and between finalizing the hiring process, a lower starting pay and unable to get ahold of anyones craigslist room-for-rent ads, I had no choice but to fold my attempts...but I WILL try again sometime. I love it up there, and WILL live there someday! I'll let you know when the day comes  -James
akamcbird
shoulda hit up a cc member for a place to stay  ...what line of work are you in?
CRF136N
 I had no clue of the CC existance at the time; I was in that dark, lost and confused period between the old Yahoo site and discovering all that the CC had to offer  I do regret not telling my current employer I wasn't coming home, and just diving into the deep end of the uncertain for once in my life...Oh well. I have no "real" "profession" I am basically in the automotive/snowmobile/motorcycle service and repair world, although I have done enough other things to date in life to about qualify me for most anything, lol. I so desperately tried to get in with the Honda motorcycle shop at the north end of town, because they were hiring techs and I was certainly qualified for the job, but the hiring manager was out at the time :fs1: I actually had 2 job offers, one was from Johnsons Tire and the other being Lowes in Anchorage, and the one room I ALMOST secured to rent was up in Wasilla...had the guy just called me back!!! :fs1: I had the cash in hand to buy that XJ too! It would have been enough to get me started, but the way I saw it was it was too far from home if things didn't go right because flights out of Anchorage were a PITA to coordinate, and being winter, I didn't want to risk a 3,000 mile drive home in a $600 xj I knew nothing about across the Canadian Yukon wilderness, lol. Of course, two days after I got home I had 3 phone calls for interviews from various other companies :wall: :wall: Thats just the story of my life :shake: Instead, I am hoping to go to Washington state...and at least it will get me 1 step closer to AK, for when the time comes :D  -James
WBKrazy
i've always wanted to go there... it was my plan to drive the dalton highway the summer after high school ended, but lack of funds and a falling out with the kid who was supposed to be my co-pilot put the lid on those plans.... someday i'll make the trip
1990 Pioneer 4x4
Don’t live up there, but the wife and I are planning a trip up there for next fall. Going to take a ferry to Juno, Ketchikan area, do some island hopping/exploring and drive back from the main land (Prince something). Any recommendations on a “must see” while were there? deziped
Take a tour of Fairbanks and check out the huge gold nugget on dispaly at the Univ there. Locals promised great fishing in nearby lakes. Three days fish-un, no fish, should have tried the river I guess. :dunno:

HOrnbrod
No offense akamcbird, But I like it where it's warmer mate. :D One of the last assignments I had in the late 90's was setting up the comms in Fort Greely when the Army was standing the base up. It involved long stays in beautiful downtown Delta Junction :ack: , with lots of trips up to Fort Wainwright :ack: :ack: . Super fine in the summer, but the winters got old fast, especially getting around. Nice to visit, but..........
akamcbird
the getting around is the best part of living in ak. i am further south (anchorage) and don't much like venturing to far in the upward direction,to cold in winter to hot in summer. I'm one of those crazys that can't wait for snowfall just half way through june. driving sideways is way more fun than forwards, plus my tires don't were so fast. deziped
Ft Wainwright not bad in winter, just use the tunnels to get to the base clubs.
akamcbird
its actually better to be outside more often so you get acclimated to the temp. then when you got to run out and start the truck you don't have to spend 20 minutes getting geared up. Oddmodman
Well, I realize this topic died 3 years ago, but what the heck. I live in Eagle River for the moment, come winter will probably be in Chugiak. Was born in Fairbanks and am part Eskimo. My mother was actually born in Tanana, and I've lived in North Pole, Fairbanks, Anderson, Healy, Chugiak, and Eagle River (though half those places I was too young to remember actually living in). My MJ is somewhat of a story. I got a black '88 MJ for free oh... 4 years ago I think. The reason it was free was because the PO lent it to his buddy to go to Wasilla, and on the way back threw a rod through the block. It was a 4 cylinder, 4 speed, 2x, and I believe it used to be some sort of postal jeep, though it had the normal driver's side. It was painted black when I got it, though you could tell it used to be white (cheap paint job), and somebody had put bedliner in the bed and on the bottom and sides of rockers, VERY nice to have, since it's prevented rust in those places, so, not including the cab floor, it's about 90% rust free. Summer of '08 I bought an '87 cherokee for 150 bucks for the engine (4 cyl), tranny (4-spd, oh and TC), and the axles to convert it to 4x4. So, since I had just graduated and gotten my first job and didn't have time or know-how, my dad ended up swapping everything over, though since the vacuum cables were all fubar'd, and dad didn't know how they went, it stayed 2x, though with a 4x front axle. At the time I had been driving a diesel Isuzu pickup (I loved that thing and want it back!!), and didn't need the jeep, so it sat for a year. Then, after my Isuzu's transmission seized, I drove a chevy cavalier that I was given for free by my friend, who damaged up its nose in a fender bender. So, drove that for a year or so until it decided to blow a head gasket, and when that happened I noticed that the engine bearings were going, as well as finally taking into account that the ignition wiring was all burnt up and bare (which was nasty), so I sold it for parts, and only then did I start driving the jeep. So, drove the jeep for just over a year, and besides the fact that it was 2x and my passenger door wouldn't open, absolutely loved it. Until, one winter day last year, in December I believe, I was headed home to Eagle River from parents' house in Chugiak, and right in front of Chugiak High School, it simply lost power. Listening to it when I turned it over, decided it was a broken timing chain (rather, Dad decided), so, it got pulled a short distance, with a SUZUKI SWIFT!!! That was pretty impressive, in the snow no less. It got left in a parking lot for a couple weeks until people complained, and I had to move it, so in moving it my friend put it in gear (we were going down hill), and it made a terrible ratcheting, shrieking, grinding sound and the wheels locked up. After that I just said screw it, it's dead. Now, (and I started another thread concerning this), I'm putting a 4.0/5spd in from a '90 MJ that I bought for $300 without a title. I'm about half way done and trying to finish before snow flies. Only been in 3 other states besides AK, and can't say I want to live anywhere else! This is the 907, the AK, the Last Frontier! Don't forget, bring a 4x4!
