Wakerider933 Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 since i don't have linkage i have to hand shift my transfer case, and i cannot get it into 2wd i have tried rolling it while i shift the arm but i have yet to make it into 2wd. any suggestions?
Eagle Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 Jack it up by the rear axle and try having someone rotate a rear wheel back and forth while you shift. You need to release any load on the mechanism.
Pete M Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 Just to be sure, what are you basing this thought on? I hope it's not just because the little 4wd light is stuck on. You wouldn't be the first to have made that assumption. :D
Geonovast Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 I would remove the front driveshaft(just to be safe). If the front yoke will turn by hand, then you're not in 4wd. If it is, and you still can't get it out, at least it will be safe to drive.
Wakerider933 Posted November 9, 2009 Author Posted November 9, 2009 its not the light the the tires chirp when i turn the lever in the case goes to 2wd but inners never make it past 4 hi i jacked it up all the way around and let it idle while i shifted it by hand i can shift it to 2wd but the front drive shaft is still being powered

Geonovast Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 IIRC the 231 has a kickback spring to actually push the fork back into 2wd. If that's broken, I could see how that could be causing a problem. The 231 in my 2.5 wouldn't go back into 2wd right away when the tailshaft seal was leaking and it was low on fluid.

biggwheels Posted November 11, 2009 Posted November 11, 2009 pull the axle on one side with the front of the truck on stands , put shifter lever in 2wd , go to other wheels and turn in both directions a few times . this has worked for me on several occasions. not sure how or why , it just works ......
