EmJay89
So my wifes XJ is sitting along the interstate right now. When you put it in any gear it just grinds and won't go. Its got the AW4 transmission and I'm pretty sure a 231 transfer case. Any ideas of what it could be?
jpdocdave
wow, pretty weird for the aw4 to act up. could it be a problem in the axle? have you tried 4wd? drive shaft is in tact?
Pete M
where is the grinding coming from? could the t-case be knocked out of gear?
EmJay89
don't think its in the axle, havent tried 4wd, the grinding is comin from the tranny/transfer case area... It just showed up on the rollback so I'm goin to check it out...
whowey
Grinding noise sounds like T-case related....
Automan2164
My vote is t-case. Â Rob L.
jpdocdave
ya, t case, thats why i said try 4 wd, move the t case shifter around. that shouldn't be too bad.
EmJay89
Well after a bunch of BS it seems to be the transfer case, go figure lol. It turns out its a 242 and i have a 231 here, can they be swapped? Whats the difference?
landlubber
the 242 has the option for part time 4x4, whereas the 231 does not. Â I believe they are an direct swap. Â that is the extent of my knowledge on the subject.
EmJay89
So i can use the 231 in the xj and just not have part time 4wd and it should be fine?
Pete M
If you use the 231, there's no more using 4wd on dry pavement. You'll lose the fulltime feature that the 242 affords. Â I think the 242 is a bit longer than the 231. But I'm straining the brain here and I might be wrong. :dunno:
flyn2er
I was in the jeep when it went out, i thought for sure it was the tranny. Did a search when i got home and came up with the bolts in the flexplate came loose. WOW was i wrong. Looks like his MJ just turned into a donor for the DD. :D
EmJay89
So I'm thinkin about gettin a rebuild kit for that transfer case, they run about $150. Has anyone ever rebuilt a transfer case or know anything about it?
jpdocdave
not sure if a standard rebuild kit will cover any or all hard parts that may have failed. make sure you know what parts went kablooey, and make sure they come in a kit.
