mvusse
I'm new to this whole AX15 thing, but from what the rest of the fluids looked like, I need to drain/refill it. Where do I find the drain plug? Where do I find the fill hole? And what fluid does it take? I think I remember reading something about 10W40. If so, what is preferred, regular, high mileage or synthetic?
BLHTAZ
The drain plug is on the lower right side near the front. The fill plug is on the left side about mid case. Chrysler has changed the recommended fluid to 10w-30 because of the sulfer content of the gear oil that was previously recommended destroying syncros. Personally, I use AMSOIL 80-90 gear oil as it has no sulfer in it and mine (the YJ) has run on it for many years now with no ill effects.
Pete M
Is it 10-w30? My brain has telling me 10-w40 and I'd like to iron that wrinkle out if you could confirm it. (not that there's a huge difference between 30 and 40, but I do like accuracy :D )
BLHTAZ
Actually, this is the only place I have seen anyone say anything about the change so I was basing that off of what I remembered seeing here. I never heard anything about using motor oil in the AX-15 while I worked at the dealership. I may have remembered wrong on the 30 / 40 part, but I'll see if there is any way that I can get a definite answer on that. I have never checked in to it because I don't believe in it personally since there are so many synthetic gear oils out there now that are affordable and do not have sulfer. AMSOIL & Royal Purple both make gear oils without sulfer that will be fine to use in the AX-15.
jeepcoma
There were a bunch of threads on this recently. The consensus was to NOT use regular motor oil; despite similar viscosity properties of 10w-30 and 80w-90 (oil and gear have different measures for viscosity, they are not directly comparable) motor oil is for a pressurized pumping system while gear oil is made for lubrication systems where the oil is flung around to lubricate and then crushed up by gears meshing together. Royal purple is good stuff if you don't mind spending the money (it's all I put in my Camaro), I'll be sticking with much more affordable Lucas Oil when I change the fluid in my AX-15. Pete M
Despite what the "consensus" might say, Chrysler officially changed the requirement from GL-3 to 10-w40 (or 30) in the AX-15. :dunno:

BLHTAZ
Redline MT90  A little internet searching has shown me that MT90 is rated at the top with AMSIOL as "the" two best choices for use in transmissions with sensitive brass syncros. I had to do some checking as I had heard of MT90, but never really knew what it was.
LoTGoD
Just picked up 4 quarts of Royal Purple Max-Gear 75W-90 for the 4WD AX-15 I have waiting to go in. Had to email the guys from Royal Purple directly to make sure that was what they recommended. We'll see how it does!
dasbulliwagen
I decided to search the Chrysler internal website, found the following info for oil in the AX15..... Gear Lube/Oil Part Numbers: 04897622A$ Issue Description: For XJ Vehicles only: 04897622AA is a 75W90 oil. 04761839AC is 10W30 oil. The 04761839AC is recommended to be used in place of 04897622AA for improved transmission shift properties. ______________________________________ Contact Us at CAGRIS@Chrysler.com for feedback related ONLY to this GPOP Tech Tip.
