87manche
someone sells aftermarket sliding rear windows on ebay. 4 door cherokee dorrs from 86-96 will fit, as will al the guts of the door. Guage cluster will need to be from an 87-90, unless you want to change to chryco temp senders and such. if you switch to guages you'll need new temp and oil senders anyways. Steering wheel should be anything with the GM column without an airbag, so probably 87-91 or 92. And what's wrong with the 87 wheel, I like mine. jeepaholic
I just like the Jeep wheel that was in my 88 :dunno: as far as fenders and gate i have to go w/ 87 and up MJ's right..Heard the 86's are different.
Pete M
I have a 91 tailgate on my 86 and it works fine.
sinnaevd
i thought the fender would work, and tailgate too. not the hood and front grille assy, this is on speculation and from what i think i've read. haven't seen it for myself

GirsMJ86
EVERYTHING that is just body stuff and not mech stuff swap between my 86 and 88. that means all grille parts, hoods, doors, tailgates, flares, dash stuff, anything else too. i have swaped all the good parts from my 88 onto my 86 but then back again once i found better parts in the junkyards. and both my 86 and 88 have this steering wheel: so you can look in any year mj if that is what you are looking for. alex
jeepaholic
That would be the one i am looking for..The one i got now looks like a boomerang inside a circle.. :ack:
GirsMJ86
i know which ones you mean. i don't like those much either. there are a few mjs in the junkyard round me if you can't find some thing i can get it for ya. they are always getting new ones. all of them still have the steering wheels like the one in my pic though. let me know if ya want me to pick something up the next time i go here soon. alex
sinnaevd
i thought you could swap anything between 87 to 92? why do the body panels not work for swapping? ( i know the front grille is a bit different)
Pete M
But remember that for some of the year changes, you must swap everything. You can't just swap hoods between 86 and 88, you must swap all associated parts so the hood latch mechanism works. You can't just pick and choose what front end parts from an 91 to put on an 88. The entire front facia must be swapped as a unit. There's a ton of interchangeability throughout the years, but plenty of little changes that can cause headaches. You heard wrong. 86 fenders and tailgate will fit. In fact, at this very moment my '88 SWB is wearing a tailgate from an '86 LWB. As to the steering wheel, I assume you have the all-black, two-spoke "station wagon" wheel. The three-spoke sport wheel was available all the way back to the original '84 XJ and will fit your truck. The ugly black one was used in the base models at least as late as 1989 or maybe '90.

I've got an 89 header, 87 grill, 88 headlight trim, 86 headlights/turn lights/driving lights, 86 fenders, 89 hood, a cut up front crossmember, and a booger welded hood release cable. Who says you have to take the whole clip? Oh, I've also got 86 and 89 doors. And a 87 windshield. And a 87 or 86 rear cab window. 92 tailights (don't ask me why). And some 96 ford taurus fans... And if we want to really delve into just how many different year parts are on my truck... Nah, let's not. I'll admit I took the easy way out by not using my 86 hood. Sorta. sinnaevd
I really hope my 50 dollar manche's unibody and "frame" are still good. I checked but didn't get a super close look. if tey aren't, it may become a parts truck. but at least there are a ton of parts I can use off of it, and it was still dirt cheap
jeepaholic
How hard is it to put doors off a xj w/power windows and locks onto a manual MJ..Is it just a matter of hot and grounds for the switches?
Pete M
Who says you have to take the whole clip? It all depends on what years are involved. You wouldn't be able to grab a headlight trim from a 91 and bolt up. But you could grab an entire front facia assembly and bolt it up.
jeepaholic
front facia...including grill or will my 87 work? As noted by a viewer the one on my truck is upside down right now..toldem it won't be upside down when i flip the truck :rotf:
Pete M
All I know for sure is that changes occured in 91 and crossing that line requires the entire fiberglass unit. If both vehicles are earlier than that, individual parts should swap.
