Automatic Transmission Question
oldjeep replied to robertlb's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
It'll be fine, I've changed the filter and fluid in several 150K plus mile AW4's without any problems -
Ouch. Here near Minneapolis today it's $2.89 for unleaded and $2.46 for e85. Which is about the price spread we normally see .40 - .50 a gallon

Idle Speed Actuator Motor
oldjeep replied to Comanchaholic's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Looks like www.partsamerica.com has them for $75 or a repair kit for $18 -
Anyone know off hand how the under dash fuse box connects to the rest of the wiring? ie - is there a big plug that disconnects everything from it? My kids 90 comanche has some electrical issues in the fuse panel. A lot of corrosion and the fuses all seem to be at an angle - indicating to me that something has come apart.

Had some time last weekend to check the floors. No suprise that the carpet was hiding some big holes. Cut out all the rot, put some primer on what was left. Patch panels got some panel adhesive, sheetmetal screws and tack welds. Everything got a good coat of herculiner inside and out before the carpet went back in.

So anyway - back to the original question. How in the world are they accomplishing running E-85 without chaning injectors. Just for the sake of more argument, lets say that you only need 15% more E85 - which is going to translate into a 15% longer injector pulse with stock injectors. Seems like a good kit would include injectors that were up to the task, but that would keep them from offering what looks like a 1 box fits all kit. Anyone actually know someone who has used one of those kits?

My sons 1990 4.0L with AW4 is getting about 17 31" tires and 4:10 gears. Not much driving over 50 mph
-
So you're going to continue to ignore that COnsumer Reports had similiar results? OK.
-
What would higher octane have to do with fuel economy? I think you are a little confused. You get detonation from running fuel that has too low an octane. Any octane over what stops detonation doesn't do anything. Needs

Yup, everything in MN is at least E10. Local news station did some E85 tests this week and they were getting 39% less milage in a Durango http://www.kare11.com/news/news_article ... yid=267612 Quote from arcticle "In other words, with E85 in the car, our mileage was 39 percent worse. The result actually was worse than we expected. Consumer Reports magazine conducted a similar road test and found mileage was 27 percent worse with E85." As would be expected by a for-profit enterprise like the 'news' station performs a 'test' and has findings that makes a better story. They don't detail driving conditions, how many miles they drove using the non-85, driving styles, or any other conditions that would effect MPG. LOL, and comsumer reports is out to get them too. "Consumer Reports magazine conducted a similar road test and found mileage was 27 percent worse with E85." If it works for you, great. Al I know is that in the Flex fuel Caravan that I owned we got 25-30% worse milage from E85 and it didn't make any financial sense to use it.

Problem with the $20 ones is that they can break really easily. I went through a couple different harbor freight/ jc whitney cheapos before buying a good one for about $125

Pull the brakes, unit bearing and axle shafts Remove the nut on each ball joint Pound the knuckle off Use a ball joint press to remove each ball joint - reverse the steps above for reassembly
-
What do you mean remove them? If you mean separate the knuckle from the housing, I never use a pickle fork for that. Just a hammer on the steering arm.
-
No problem, I've been looking at his info for a while. Because with the same bellhousing you can attach to a bunch of caddillac engines including the northstar and short star

That's what the picture is a picture of. A 3800SC with an isuzu axium bellhousing and a jeep AW4
-
The 3800SC to AW4 isn't exactly uncharted territory. Here's a thread from 3 years ago on doing that swap into an isuzu. http://www.4x4wire.com/forums/showflat. ... ber=611201 The isuzu bellhousing has the starter on the other side: They started using it in '02, and in all vehicles in '03. The 3.2, 3.5 and 3.5DI in the Rodeo and Axiom all use this bell with the auto-tranny. The tranny is an A340 family tranny. There's also at least 3 buggies on pirate that I know of that run that combination.

What I don't get is how they are accomplishing this without changing the injectors. On a 2.5L the stock injectors barely flow enough to run the engine. I assume what they are doing is increasing the pulse width on the injector, but it would be hard to consistantly provide the extra 40% or so fuel volume that you need to run E85
-
Why would you want to do that? The milege is around 25% worse with E85, which more than negates the cost savings. Not to mention how many fuel filters you are going to go through while the alchohol cleans 20 years worth of crap out of your fuel system.
-
I've seen that setup too, but I prefer the quick up and down shift of 2 momentary buttons on my shift knob. When you use an AW4 with a 2.5L and big tires, manual control on the road is a must.
-
Ah, figured since you said it wasn't worth the effort that you were giving up on the aw4. Bretts system works pretty well, but make sure you have a really good ground. His microprocessor gets messed up and shifts randomly if there is a lot of noise on the ground. Found that one out the hard way. If I had it to do over again I would have just built my own controller, not much to it - 3 relays and a PIC is about all you need.
-
If you want an auto, why not just use a 200R4 out of an S10?
-
Same way I made mine work with a MPI 2.5L Get a flexplate that fits your motor and redrill it. I had to use a custom bushing in the crank to get the convertor to seat correctly.

Pretty sure that the 4.0 TC physically fit in the bellhousing, the major difference is the stall speed. Here's some size specs on the TC's http://www.idatc.com/chrysler/jeep/a340_jeep.htm
