Comanche Camper... The Comansion!!
neohic replied to neohic's topic in MJ Hardcore Tech: Epic Journeys to Greatness
Took some time today and finished the cabinets for real. I found some nice latches to keep everything closed when the camper is moving. I also put together the wiring. Being that everything was cut at the salvage yard up to the rear harness plug I just picked it up from there so everything unplugs just like from the factory. My camera is starting to get fussy, but I did manage to get one decent picture today: -
xjrev10. He's an awesome dude and a great MJ ally in these parts. Otherwise, I'm about a four hour hike from Duluth. Why the move?

Comanche Camper... The Comansion!!

From what I understand, the topper has been in MN for the past 10 years or so, but only mounted on a truck for the past 5. Being that WilderNest does a great job of keeping the majority of the moving parts to the inside the springs are in great shape. Yeah... there's a little surface rust on them in a couple spots, but it's only towards the outside of them where there is a small opening in the canvas (WilderNests are not completely sealed). The fiberglass is nice but I may have to reseal the gelcoat around the front window. Almost looks as though someone had it mounted too close to the cab and it rubbed a little. This from a dude in Florida? Oh, man... rub it in, how 'bout. Next it'll be, "how's the floors in your trucks?", right? "See any of that rust lately?" Naw... I'm just joshin'. But seriously, some of us just like chillin' with Canada. -
G-Dangit. For reals, I live too far away and miss all the good stuff. I'd totally dust off my kilt for that kind of occasion.

My Badass Metric-Ton Comanche Build! (The End)
neohic replied to MancheKid86's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
Couldn't help but notice that your rear axle is out of an XJ with that shock mounts the way they are. Are the spring perches moved or are they still in the factory locations?... 'cause that'd be bad. -

Cabinets done. Started the weekend by trying to get it as set up as possible inside my garage... thank you tall ceilings! Yup... it's tight, but it almost fit. Blank canvas: Probably over built the frames: Figured out where to put some doors and put a skin on them: Finally, some carpet to finish them off: Went as big as possible too: To finish up the inside, I'll throw down a carpet runner down the middle. Also, I'd like to figure out some kind of simple latch for the doors so they don't pop open when the trailer is moving. Inside, there's plenty of room for most of the typical camping gear. It'll be where I'll mount a battery eventually too. Maybe get crazy and a few LED lights or something. I also did my favorite fix so far by replacing the struts to hold up the lift gate... getting tired of propping it up with a broom and kicking it out when getting in or out and smashing it into my head. Not sure what'll be next... probably wiring or finish up the water tank. -

I like the idea of an unmodified box. Besides, without the cab in front of the topper, it really isn't all that noticeable at all. Almost finished the cabinets today also. A frustrating experience with a fussy staple gun put a stop to all of that though. :fs2: Hopefully finish tomorrow. -

Wow! I went through the rest of this and could've swore that I already posted something. Hu... I suppose it's only fair to participate. 1. I refuse to drink through a straw. 2. I pass out when anything hits me from the knees down. 3. I finally gave in and got glasses for reading... or 90% of the things I do with a welding helmet on my head. 4. Crohn's disease keeps me from eating most things delicious and competing in food challenges. 5. I have never shot, much less held any firing weapon... not even a sling shot.

This! Couldn't agree more! I wasn't even around when the first round came out, but that doesn't change the fact that this jewel of a franchise ended in an unfair and unfinished style. Max couldn't have said it better himself: Thunderdome was no way to finish. "Now there's nothing"? No, now there is hope of a new beginning to a a spoiled ending. Thank you, Max. Thank you!

Nice job, Pete! Looks real sharp!

I'll have one on the tongue and two on the rear. Waiting on the front jack until I have the front figured on where everything will go. The rear couple will be a part of the bumper. Not entirely sure on the final design, but they'll slide in and pin like a reciever hitch on each corner. As far as the bouncing around, not sure if that'll happen while sleeping. I'd imagine that things would be more unstable while moving around... like when entering or exiting... because you have to do that through the rear in one of these... on your hands and knees... WHAT ARE YOU THINKIN' ABOUT, FOLKS?!! :shake: -
Back from the dead bump.

Yeah. I'll just pull some off the shelf when it comes time for wiring it. For how tight my garage is, I'd hate for something to happen. They can wait for now. -

YES!!! Update time! From Friday into Saturday, I got the frame done. Again, everything is stainless from the springs up... even the shackles. Needed a way for the water lines to pass through the frame: Due to the fact that they were the only wheels and tires I had around that hold decent air, the frame got mocked up on 33s. Not sure what the springs are from, but they sat just about perfect without the topper: Small step back because of my lack of planning on where the spring mounts had to hang. The tank needed an small notch... not a real big deal: Still need to finish the lower shock mounts and tighten up the straps under the water tank: Going home! With the topper on, the 33s are a bit tight... just what I wanted to see! Should be just about right when it's sitting on 31s: Windy as all get out today, so I didn't completely set it up. You get the idea though: Next on the list is to finish up the fit up. The front gap needs to be taken care of and the side rails need some adapter angles made up because of the taper to the box sides. I'd love to really clean it up and add some paint here and there, but the weather just won't allow it. Still, plenty to do! -

I added power windows and locks to my '88 Eliminator using the factory manuals and from a few diagrams. Here's a link to the manual: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=12734&hilit=Electrical+manual ... good stuff in there. -
Skipped it last year, so we're pushing this thread back to the surface. I'll ask it again... what's everybody up to today when we should be spending time with or significant others? I'm chillin' at work right now planning out the next round of parts for the camper. That's justified, right? Putting a bunch of time into something that will later be a place for the wife and I to stay while out on the road reguardless of how much time I'm not spending with her to build it. That's almost romantic, I think.

Not sure. I asked and got the same answer that I usually give when building something for her... "a while". :D
