87/00 Comanche Classic Diesel LWB 4 X 4
turboxr replied to b16gsr's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
Dude, I'm so stoked you like it! I'm glad you're plugging along with the diesel idea I implanted ;) You are building it exactly as I was planning to. Wish I would have kept it now, but with my new job taking all my time at the moment, I needed something a bit less time consuming. Keep me posted brother! Joe -
I just finished my head gasket job and I bought a new fan from a 95 XJ. I installed the fan and checked the ground wire from the fan relay and I have power to the fan relay when the truck is running but the fan won't kick on. I'm wondering how long it usually takes at idle for the fan to kick in? I let it idle for 30min and it never kicked in. I'm leaning towards the fan relay, but is there anything else that could be not allowing it to kick on?

Just did head gasket...still something awry.
turboxr replied to turboxr's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Valve stem seals were not replaced. Smoke is white. I'll drop the exhaust tomorrow morning and check. There's no oil in the intake. -
This is just great. Had a couple cylinders down on compression. Pulled the head, had it checked. It was warped to kingdom come. They pressure tested it as well. All good. Milled and clean bill of health for the head. Installed head gasket and head and fired it up and it's running much better than before when it was trying to compress coolant, but it's still smoking like Barack Obama. Smoke doesn't smell too sweet. Not sure what could be wrong. I did break the valve cover breather when taking it out. It was very brittle. So I mocked up a hose direct for the time being. Is there a pcv valve in that breather elbow? I'm not sure what it could be. Any thoughts?

5.2 Magnum or MB OM617 turbodiesel?
turboxr replied to turboxr's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Only other diesel that fits besides the stock anemic 2.1 is the 4BT but that's even more expensive. I suppose a VW TDi would fit but then you run into management problems and tranny adapting problems. -

Not sure what's wrong with the poll. Oh well. -
5.2 Magnum or MB OM617 turbodiesel?
turboxr replied to turboxr's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Well, considering my 4.0 gets 14mpg and similar swaps get closer to 25-28 out of the 617, I'd say I would recoup the money if it were similarly powerful to the 5.2 (which I need for towing and hauling). The added bonus is that the 617 is a multi-fuel motor. It can be run on veggie oil with just a auxilliary tank and tank heater. -
5.2 Magnum or MB OM617 turbodiesel?
turboxr replied to turboxr's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Please share the mods that will produce v-8 power from an MB OM617. I've got one waiting on an engine stand I'm planning on dropping into an MJ and my DD is a MB 190d. Part of my daily net reading is keeping up with MB boards and a few diesel mod boards. You can adjust/remove the ALDA, use improved injectors, and get IP timing adjusted good to help things out but its my understanding the limitation is the IP can't deliver more fuel to increase the HP. Obviously I like the OM617 with an AX-15 as a power plant for an MJ and my expectation is for it to have more useful power than the 2.5 but less than the 4.0 while delivering 25%+ better fuel mileage. I hope you've discovered something I've been missing to increase the power of an OM617 as it would make my intended re-power even more exciting to me. Good luck with your project! There are guys in Finland and Sweden making big power with the 617. Of course, they upgrade to the MYNA IP which is very expensive. www.superturbodiesel.com Power from my 5.2 Magnum is rated at 220hp/285ft lbs. The OM617.952 is rated at 125hp/181ft lbs. If I were able to achieve say, 200hp/250+ft lbs, I'd be a happy man. The thing is, it will take money- a lot more than the 5.2- and I'm not sure the added fuel economy would cancel out the initial investment quick enough to be worth it. Diesel is cooler. Magnum might be a better idea. My tentative plan is to run an ax15 with a Dakota 3.9 bellhousing with the 5.2 if I go that route because of Dodge's inability to make a good auto trans. -
Having a hard time deciding where to go next. I already have the 5.2 ZJ donor vehicle, but gas mileage is killer and the 5cyl Benz turbodiesel sounds great for getting 25ish mpg. In modded form, they can make similar power as the 5.2 and be way cooler anyway. Upside to the 5.2 is I already have the motor and wiring. Help me decide. What do you think?

Well. I picked up the donor tonight. Franklin was a little angry with me by the time I got home. He was a little "hot" lol. In all, I made it with no hiccups. I guess I settled on the V8 swap since I've already got the thing and it only cost me $200 for the entire donor. V8 swap, here I come. -
Instrument and taillights out. Need help
turboxr replied to turboxr's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Well, after all day chasing the stupid gremlin, it was just the auxiliary license plate light wire being plugged into the ground that's right next to it. I think I did that. Boy, I really love wasting an entire day. I feel sheepish. Oh well, I rewired a bunch of stuff that needed rewiring... -
Instrument and taillights out. Need help
turboxr replied to turboxr's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Ok. I unplugged the rear harness and popped a fuse in, turned the lights on and wham, no fuse blown. But now neither turn signal works. I assume that's because the rear turn signals aren't plugged in. I pulled the entire taillight harness out and am currently tracing each wire to see where she goes. Should the taillight bulb holders be packed with yellowish gummy material (which I am assuming is some sort of OEM dialectric sturf)?? It looks nasty and my instincts tell me to clean it out.... Thanks for the help!
