Had the front tires off today replacing the flexible brake lines. I noticed that the coil springs are rubbing on the upper half of the C's. Also they aren't centered over the coil seats on the axle. The diameter of the coils is about 5.25 inches. What is the diameter of a stock spring? (Not the wire diameter just overall) Here are some pictures.
Just refurbished my parking brake mechanism. Thought I would share a few things I did differently. First off I did not want to cut up the mechanism. There was some slop left to right in both the pedal pivot and the release pawl. So I tried "tightening" the rivets. I used a center punch to flare out the rivet so it would grab again.
Put something on the back side of the rivet so that it won't bend the whole mechanism. Worked really well. Just make sure you don't go to much or you will end up having to drive a screwdriver down the inside trying to free it up again (made that mistake). Make sure both the release pawl and pedal teeth line up.
After I got everything operating smoothly with very little slop left to right. I found a spring to replace the soft factory spring. I found a #120 extension spring at the hardware store that works great. The rubber stop had fallen to pieces so I used a 5/8 heater as a replacement.
I bent up the stop plate on the pedal and slid it over that. A tight fit but it won't fall off.
Sounds like your blower motor may be on the way out. I had a problem with blowing the thermal fuse on the blower motor resistor. Couldn't figure it out went through 3 blower motor resistors before I checked the blower motor draw. It also did not sound bad (wasn't squealing or grinding). Just something else to check.
I had something similar happen when backing out of a parking lot. The cause of mine was 2 of the 3 bolts for the steering gear box had fallen out and the third one finally snapped when I turned the wheel. Thankfully it happened in a parking lot and not on the road. Check the steering gear box mounts.
Yes I corrected the speedometer gear when I got it. P.O. had put 31's on the truck but had not changed the speedometer gear. According to all the charts online line of speedometer gears I have the right one. It is an 28 tooth gear. (3.07 gears). I tried the 27 tooth as well but the 28 seems to be more accurate on the milage.
I am having a unique issue with my speedometer. The previous owner had put on the Azzy's Design gauge faces. They look good but I I think he messed up the speedometer. My odometer works great and milage is accurate according to the mile markers on the road. The issue is with my speed. When I am doing 25 (according to the gps) my speedo reads 30. And when doing 60 (gps) it reads 62. Seems like the faster I go the more accurate it is. Any one have a fix for this?
For the lift I have heard that V8 Javelin coils work well. For the rear I just used XJ add a leafs and it worked out really well. If you ever want to put a trailer hitch on it check out this thread over on AMC Eagles Nest. https://forums.amceaglesden.com/index.php?topic=46767.0
The wagons work well with the ZJ hitch. However there are 2 styles of hitches available for the ZJ make sure it is the one where the receiver is in the middle of the cross bar not below it or it won't fit. I used this method to install a receiver hitch on both my dad's wagon and my SX4. Worked out great.
I am thinking about regearing my truck to 4.10's with a 4.0, AX-15 and 31's. Any one have experience with that combo? How's it do on the highway at 75-80?
Well here it is a 1983 AMC Eagle SX4. Carbureted 4.0, Borg Warner T5, NP229, 2001 Dana 35 with 3.54 gears and Detroit Truetrac. And my 1987 Comanche, LWB, 4.0, AX-15, NP242, D30 and factory D44 rear.
Just browsing car-part.com and came a cross a Comanche in Florence, Alabama. With what looks to be a factory roll bar if any one is interested and in the area. It looks like it is in great condition probably lots of other good parts as well
