  1. My money is on the slave, not to mention a buddy of mine says the same. Highly doubt that thing has ever been replaced. And the brake fluid is leaking out of the back of the tranny. So I believe it's probably a combination. Just for my knowledge, how long would it take to replace the slave on an AX4?
  2. Need pics and a price, if you have it that is. Am willing to throw out a few bones if it's in decent shape. Thanks
  3. Seriously hoping that it's just the two gaskets and not the rear main. :fs1: Going to clean everything up tomorrow before I go to work on it to see what all is exactly leaking. Anybody have any recommendations on engine degreasers/cleaners? I've used a few, with varying results.. :dunno:
  4. As far as I can tell, there is NO fluid leaking onto the fuse box, and the pedal is as straight as an arrow. ---- If it isn't the master leaking and it isn't a seal issue, what's the next thing to look for? The amount of Dot 3 this truck is burning through is ridiculous! I've heard the adjusting sleeve on the clutch could be a problem, but is the only way to check that by tearing into the tranny?
  5. Have since replaced the Oil Pan and Valve cover gaskets since I got the truck, which eliminated the leaks. About a few weeks later (mid October), the oil pan started leaking again and I chalked it up to not using a Torque gun on the oil pan (torqued using the good old fashioned arms) Since then, I've been adding oil when needed, and tightening when needed. I've also noticed not only is the back of the engine block coated in oil, it's leaked down all over the oil pan, and onto the tranny. Which, as you can imagine, is not making me very happy. :fs1: ----- The million dollar question is, aside from redoing the valve cover, and oil pan gaskets with RUBBER this time instead of $#!&ty cork, where else are trouble spots for the 2.5 leaking oil? I've heard about the oil filter rings and rear main on the 4.0 being trouble spots, but can't find any info on the 2.5, unfortunately. :(
  6. Will be turning 20 in September. The old girl is still 5 years older though.
  7. Interesting.... :brows:  :hijack: Ah... the M715. Now that's a real truck. Another personal favorite of mine.
  8. Bumpity Bump. Need a new one because I'm 90% sure that the one I have now (93 XJ deck) has issues with the tape deck playing properly. Lemme know what you got, if anything. :(
  9. Some 360 games and a few mech put-together models. Got the GF a nice Opal necklace for Christmas since I didn't really get her something nice for her birthday this past October. Also getting new tires for the truck soon, as well as a new phone! Cheers all around
  10. I had this problem in my MJ as well. The tach would do the same thing you're describing, and then it finally quit working all-together. I cleaned all the grounds, checked all the connections, but couldn't figure out the problem. Decided to then swap over another tachometer, and the problem went away. I'm thinking your tach's starting to experience premature failure? :dunno: Could be wrong, but you could always try swapping over another tach to make sure. Not sure if the fact that my 2.5 AX4 makes a difference in it though, as I'm not sure if it's wired differently for automatics than manuals.
  11. Jesus, didn't know there was so much to be learnt here. Lol. Definitely know a lot more now than I did 15 minutes ago. So I can say it's safe to assume that only the J20 series got the rear D60 if equipped; and most J10's came with either a AMC 20 or D44 rear end? Since the 20 was the larger, heavier, and more powerful truck; depending on the setup; and vice versa. -EDIT- If this was already answered with the super posts detailing everything, apologies; I just want to make sure I have my facts straight.
  12. No harm meant. You put emphasis on part of your question, I put emphasis on part of my reply. Pat hit the nail on the head. I've battled with people to much to sugar coat it anymore. Won't happen. Well, it will, if you either have deep pockets and a hole in the wallet, or you have a little Jim Oshel in ya, and do it just because you want to. Rob I feel ya', especially because I know how battling w/ people goes. No harm meant, and I'm glad it didn't come down to having an ITG debate; there's already too much of that $#!& going on around the rest of the web.
  13. The exact reason don't fit because they are made for a completely different vehicle. Plain and simple. You've hear it a thousand times because it is true. Anyway you want to make XJ tails fit is up to you. Rob Jeez, no reason to bite my head off Rob. As I said before, I've never looked at the two side by side, and I've never bothered to look at how they mount onto the XJ; so I'm sorry if my question upset anyone. The only info I've ever heard on the subject is always everyone says they don't but I never read anyone's explanation as to why. :hmm: As for the other replies, thanks... I guess?
  14. I've heard it a thousand times, and I know you all have too. The old story about how the XJ tails won't fit on an MJ even though people still like to try and say they will. Just curious, as I've never taken apart XJ tails(mainly looking at the 84-96 ones here), what's the exact reasoning why they won't fit? :dunno: Also, anyone got a side by side shot of the two together? Reason I ask all this is because I've been thinking that I like the XJ tails a lot more than the MJ's... :brows:
  15. Awesome guys.  Thanks for the stories, info, and support. Makes me want to go scour craigslist til' I find a good one to start my own story from.
  16. I'm fine with the 'Manche for a while, but I do plan on getting a mid 70's-80's J10 someday. My GF is infatuated with my friend's '66 C10  :shake: and whenever he brings the old girl around everyone always laughs when he parks it next to my truck. It looks like the thing is going to eat my '87. Not only that, but everyone jests at the fact that my truck is being powered by the 2.5, instead of the 4.0. Which, I just laugh at them and tell them that my great mileage warrants keeping the 4, instead of swapping to a 6. Back on track though, I know there's probably a few guys on here that have owned a J-Truck or two. I just wanted some opinions and input on them. I'd probably have better luck on the FSJ forum, but I figured I might as well ask here. 1. What was the pricing way back in the day for a bare bones J10? I always wondered about that. 2. Are there specific years I look for when I pick one of these up? IE: X Year had better engine layouts than X year; or X year had less chance of frame rot than X year. Obviously the last year for the J-Truck series (87) would be my preferred due to rarity. But I highly doubt I'll find an '87 J10. 3. What's the preferred engine in these/why? Everyone always boasts about the 360 and the 401  but always seems to dismiss the 258; mainly because most people w/ a 258 complain about it being a gutless engine w/ no power. My dad and mom used to have an Rambler back the mid 80's and my dad always felt the 258 was an unstoppable engine. IMHO, I would love to have the 258, just for the fact I could swap over to a 242. 4. Preferred transmission/why? I've read stories on most of the different offered transmissions for these things and I've heard good and bad, pricey and not-so-pricey (when it comes to replacement parts/overhauls) 5. 4x4? Pros and Cons of transfercases? I'd like to have a 4 wheel drive vehicle someday, if for just occasional off-road use and maybe for emergency puposes; but what 4x4 system should I look for? Likewise, what transfercases are good choices, and which ones aren't? 6.Where are the worst spots on the truck for rust? I've heard that rust is predominate on the bed; just like most everyone has run around like Fred Flinstone at some point with the MJ's on this site. 7. What's the best piece of advice you could give someone wanting one of these? Other than you better have some deep pockets and a lot of patience.... Now where have I heard that one before?
  17. Can't wait to see that new bumper! :brows: Lol, but that's a pretty nice ride you have there. It's got a nice clean look to it, and hardly any rust! You have no idea how much I wish my truck was rust free :fs1:
  18. Back to lurking status on the site sadly. Progress has been slow, and few and far between these days, but It's still occurring. Shame I can't kick my own @$$ into doing more work nowadays. :fs1: :thwak: Did some moderate updates to the truck since the last post. I figured, "Out with the old and..... in with the nothing!" Just kidding, I had to clean up the grille a bit from one of the bug storms I went through driving along the lakes around here. I was also going through the task of trying to get some new horns I picked up as well to work. Suffice to say, they didn't. And, I despise AMC for the horrible horn placement (have to take apart the driver's bezel/headlight/housing to access it.) Does anybody know how the horns grounding system works? It's basically the horn w/ a metal piece jutting off and a bolt goes through the center of that piece. I tried grounding the piece by laying it against the truck, but I'm not sure if that was strong enough.... :hmm: Also note the shiny chrome front bezel pieces. Scored those a while back if you remember, and just NOW got around to putting them on back in early November. :thwak: Something has do be done about the laziness. Next on the list was putting some nifty swag on the truck (thanks again Pete for the CC decal  ) 10 minutes later, and swag done. Hopefully I never have to replace these things, or find a reason to get rid of my old back window in favor of a fancy new slider... :brows: Fast forward to a few weeks later and another JY trip, and I decided to clean up the roof of the cab. Paint was starting to fleck off and seemed like it was in the beginning stages of getting rusty. Not today Mother Nature. Believe me, the primer job was a lot better looking than that; but a sudden downpour ruined my work. I primed and painted a few more spots around the truck (like the rusty roof behind the primer spot) which turned out very well. Primer redone, spots fixed. Still have that derpy grey shark fin on top of the roof. I ran out of "Shadow Blue" and have to pick up some more one of these days. The GF likes the fin though; so I'm tempted to keep it. :rotf: Along with the roof, I primed and painted some spots in the bed, and the tie down hooks in the truck. Turned out nicely, but I wish I could have been able to do the entire bed. :( Before my last trip to the JY w/ my buddy to get parts for his XJ, I did some bushing replacement on my wiper system. Fixed the sloppy wipers I had, but the water tube going to the holding tank came loose and I lost all my fluid. Going to have to go back in and recheck everything... Finished bushing replacement. God these arms were a PITA to get out of the truck. Took me a good 20 minutes and a lot of swearing to get it out. I remember that day because it was only 90 out when I was doing it and by the time I finished, I was covered in sweat. Last semi-big thing I accomplished last week. Scored an AMC cluster out of a Chero. Waggy at the P&P for 30 smackos. Brought it home and set it up inside the truck. My tach problem from before is gone, and since I recalibrate the new one, it reads correctly. I thought I had an oil pressure issue, but the new gauge works well; and the readout from the last one was accurate. It seems I have about 50-55 PSI driving on the highway, and about 35-40 idling. I was pretty impressed that the engine is still holding that kind of pressure after so long. I also discovered that my thermostat is shot (truck barely gets to 160 after completely warming up), and I plan on replacing it within the next few days, along with the upper/lower rad. hoses and a radiator flush. The absolute best thing I like about the new cluster is this. After tinkering and setting back the miles... Sweet trip gauge Speedo assembly. Makes my life a lot better. More pictures tomorrow, because I can't seem to think of all the other things I've done. :chillin:
  19. Yup. He went out to the LKQ in Daytona Beach. He was pulling parts from 2 of the MJ's I already demolished. Lol
  20. Considering 3 of those days were due to problems my truck was giving me, and the fact it's a 25 mile ONE WAY trip; there aren't any other people I know who would even think of giving me a ride that far out just to go to work, so I was (for all intents and purposes) screwed. 1 of those days was for my dying aunt going into have surgery to try and remove harmful tumors from her breasts which she almost died during surgery. And the last one was visiting a close friend of mine who got into a serious accident on 1792. So no offense to you, I just don't really appreciate the snark comments when the reasons I had for missing those days were completely understandable and justifiable. And if they weren't supposed to be taken that way, I'm sorry for interpreting them that way. Just my 2 cents man.
  21. Thanks guys, I appreciate all the words of wisdom. And believe me Jim, if I still had my nice old "Airsoft gun" (nobody else around here has a firearm unfortunately) I'd be making marks in the bastards already missing teeth. I think Ryan put it best. Things will always get better, no matter how bleak everything seems at times. Hell, I made more headway on my truck yesterday than I have in the last 7 months! Now I just have to get the small details finished up for now and everything should be cool. Too bad I don't have anyone to go junking with that I don't have to show them the ins-and-outs of how to do it.  But one day at a time, right? :wrench:
  22. Well, a lot of things happened to me today, but the last thing I expected to have happen to me was getting "Laid Off"(fired) from my job I've had for basically the last 7 months (a year if you want to consider the 4 month stint I had a 2 years ago with my former boss and his nephew; who quit working for him 2 months ago because his uncle is a @#$%ing moron). I was doing Landscaping work, but it was definitely a lot more than just landscaping. If it had to deal with the outdoors in any way, shape, or form, I probably had to do it. Make driveways? Did it. Build walls and install irrigation? Did that too. Hell, I even mechanic-ed on most of our vehicles and was usually the one who kept them running, and cleaned out. I was basically the only model employee in our little 5 person "company", driving 45 miles roundtrip EVERY DAY for 7 months this past year, 5 days a week. The pay? Pfft. A full time job without the full time pay. I was lucky to get a full paycheck ($300 base pay, sometimes more, most times less) most of the time. Today, the MJ went down, which is not surprising (usually does that on a work day every other 3 weeks) and collectively I've missed only about 5 days these last 7 months. So, I worked on the truck today and had a decent, albeit rainy day. Earlier tonight, I get a couple text messages from my friend's dad (who is basically the only one I get along with at work, aside from one other guy) who is the brother-in-law of my boss; he said that "Yeah, I tried to talk him out of it and stick up for you, but he says that you're out. From the looks of things, "X" is going to be gone Friday, and I'll probably end up following suit." I wasn't even surprised at this at first, just stunned. I don't know why he's going to fire all his employees except for himself and his "goonie" that's currently on vacation and won't be back 'til next week. I guess that's just life though. The most ironic thing is that I didn't even get fired by my own boss; he had to get his own brother-in-law to do it for him. ------------------- Long story short (sorry about it, just need to vent), what do you guys do to cope with stress? I'm usually the best person out of anyone I know at doing this, but tonight I'm at a loss for words, and don't know what I'm going to do now. Guess it's going to be a while longer before I get the money to go to mechanic school.
  23. Did so, come to find out I'm completely out of Dot 3 in the Master reservoir (didn't bother checking the first time around because I should still be full). Considering I topped it off the about a week ago, and this thing never goes through fluid like it did. Time to start looking for leaks.... again. :shake: :fs1:
  24. :fs1: Definitely not a good way to start out the week. Drove around yesterday in the 'Manche with the GF and a buddy of mine. We head up to my local mall with no problems at first. During the trip to the mall, whenever I go to switch into 2nd, 3rd, etc. the truck acts like I'm shifting too early (I was not) and seems like it loses a lot of power trying to keep up and go. This happens like 4-5 times but we get to the mall. We're there for about 45 minutes, we come back and I take my friend home; no problems. Me and the GF go back to my house; again, no problems what-so-ever with shifting. Fast forward to this morning when I start the truck to head to work. I've completely lost all clutch pressure and can push it damn near the floor with about 3-4 inches of actual "pressure" on the clutch. I don't see any leaks from under the truck other than the normal ones I'm used to  and checked all the connections to everything. No spring fell off the clutch pedal, nothing seems amiss other than the boot in the back where the tube is fed through seems to be leaking grease(?). Although I'm not sure if that's normal or not, since I never checked it regularly since I received the truck (PO told me that a new hydraulic clutch was put in a few weeks before I got the truck) So does anyone know what I should look for to see what the problem is? Picture of the boot, if it helps. So glad I installed those kicklights.
  25. I have an 86 with the blue interior. Others are saying it is common, but I seem to be having a time finding blue parts for it. Same here. I've found VERY few and far between blues. 1 MJ (for sale here on the Club) and a Cherokee w/ blue in my local P&P that somebody had completely destroyed most, if not all the useful interior parts in some way when dismantling the interior. :fs1:
