Making The Thunderbird Great Again
Motorhead X replied to Minuit's topic in Member Projects: Other Cool Stuff
Yeah... Those T/A's are going to be at least double that. But you'll be graduating school soon! I hope you have plenty of cash in the near future to do whatever you like to your vehicles. -
Making The Thunderbird Great Again

I know this isn't supposed to get interesting, but if you get a bug in ya...(and feel like burnin' some cash) maybe some radial T/A's? Oops! Sorry just noticed that post where you say it is kinda falling apart. Probably not a candidate for expensive tires. -
The Trash Truck - 87 Comanche rebuild
Motorhead X replied to MOBBiN's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
I have no idea if this will help, but mine would bog down when giving it throttle. Not nearly as bad as you describe, but it is now running quite well after I put in some fuel system cleaner. The only other thing I did at the same time was clean the battery contacts after it wouldn't start a few days ago (Thanks Pete). So it had to be one of those solutions. I was hesitant to order it because this stuff always seems like snake oil to me, but I took a chance because I had a gut feeling my injectors are/were clogged and I haven't got to replacing them with the 4 hole injectors yet (it is #5 on my list though!). I used BG 44K but there are other, less expensive versions by Lucas, Redline, etc. at the local auto parts store. I think the previous owner of my truck might have run cheap gas. Especially with the new gas formulas and the ethanol, maybe junk builds up... My theory is the injectors get clogged and can't get the fuel into in the cylinder fast enough so it leans out. If you really want to do it right, I suppose getting the injectors cleaned/replaced would be the more complete solution. My plan is to use the cheaper fuel cleaner every 4 or 5 tanks as preventative maintenance and get those 4 hole injectors in asap. I don't doubt the battery contacts solution either though... My lights seem brighter and it is possible the fuel cleaner did nothing. So YMMV. -
I"m fine with anyone sharing their experiences with their parents on this thread, no matter what the situation. I wish your father well and hopefully he will have a different and better experience. This is good advice. I'm a grown man, but for some reason stuff with my Dad digs deep. I need to remember that he has a great sense of humor and I can make him laugh pretty easily.

Your truck is looking great. I'm inspired by all the work you have been doing.

Help - truck won't start. No power at all
Motorhead X replied to Motorhead X's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Sure seems to be running better too. Although I did just put some of that BG 44k stuff in the tank. All I had to work with were some pliers, but a few scratches did the trick. Battery terminal cleaner is a great idea. -

That was it! I owe you big time Pete. Pizza and beer someday somewhere. -
Also, sorry to hear about your father in law having Alzheimer's.

Yes, forgiveness has been very important along the way. I even told him that I forgave him a few years ago when he apologized for his mistakes long ago with my Mom and a bunch of other stuff. I think I will go for another visit soon. He'll be moving up to NY for assisted living (if we can get him to go) and to be closer to his sister and other family, so I'll be able to visit there as well. He's a big, tough and intimidating guy. I'm hoping it all works out somehow. I got my Comanche from my Dad, so whenever I drive it, it reminds me of him.

Thanks man. His sister has set up a DNR and she has medical power of attorney. All of his affairs are in order and he is being set up in an assisted living facility soon. I don't like that he'll most likely decline to the point where he is a body without a mind. There isn't anything I can do about it. Sometimes these situations become easier to figure out after writing them down and/or sharing with someone. If there is anything to be gained from this, I would think it is important to live life to the fullest now. It all goes by real fast.

I know this isn't really truck related, but maybe someone else here has been through this and can help. My Dad who is 72 started having some problems a few years ago. He couldn't remember simple stuff. Because she didn't want to deal with being stuck taking care of him, his 3rd wife left him (after my Dad had raised her two daughters). I had to go through the divorce for him because he wasn't capable of sorting through the details. The doctors say it's Alzheimer's with possible mini-strokes. I never liked his wife and she spent all of his money on horses. I managed to save his house and clean up his financial life as best I could. After the dust settled, he tried to move on. But it became obvious recently that he wasn't going to be able to live on his own anymore. The troubling part is that he is still very strong physically and could live for a while. My Dad and I weren't ever that close. He was into woodworking and his latest wife/family. I was always into cars, music and other adventures. I know he doesn't want to live like this, but I'm not really sure if he knows anything anymore. Some days he's there fairly good, and others are pretty bad. If I wait to the point where he is totally gone, then there are less options. I don't know what to do. Sorry this is such serious stuff, but there has to be something better than doing nothing. Anyone been through this before?

While I don't have any sage advice on a career path, you only get to be in your 20's once, so be happy now. I live in a place where people have unbelievable amounts of money, yet they are often the most miserable. Don't wait to be content with your life, no matter what the circumstances. I will add that I think Publix is a good bet and with the way things are changing, you might find your company owned by Amazon one day... but people won't stop eating any time soon. If you really can't be happy there, for whatever reason, use it to springboard you to the next thing.

Thanks everyone. I opened the inspection cover and all four bolts are flush. I couldn't get in there to check tightness because one of the larger cover bolts is backwards and won't come out without removing the exhaust, but I'm fairly confident that the interior bolts are ok for now. The more time I spend under there, the more it sounds like something in the block.

These are all good suggestions. Thanks. II decided to crawl underneath right after a cold start this morning. The noise is much louder near the back of the oil pan than it is at the front of the motor. So until further investigation, I'm probably ruling out the water pump and accessories. This has me concerned. It just sounds darn right ugly and it really bothers me knowing that something is going south. It still runs pretty good otherwise though, so we'll see.

My MJ has been making a fairly loud sound that indicates some type of worn out part. It is the worst when I first start the cold motor and goes away as the motor warms up. My first thought was something in the bottom of the motor, which would be the worst case scenario, but then I thought it could be the water pump. So I am considering replacing the water pump this weekend while I have the radiator out which also needs to be replaced. Any other suggestions on what could be making the noise? It sounds kinda like a diesel knock or marbles rolling around in a steel can. I figured if it was something in the bottom (or top) of the motor, it wouldn't completely go away as things warm up. The water pump is not currently leaking and I have had NO overheating issues. I am only replacing the radiator because it has a slow, weepy, leak at the base of the trans cooler connection. I also plan on replacing the thermostat while I am in there. Thanks all.

Exhaust manifolds and C.A.R.B.
Motorhead X replied to Motorhead X's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Figured I would post an update regarding the Banks Revolver exhaust. So far it has been good. I have noticed a slight increase in power, but I'm still using the stock down pipe that has the "kink" in it. That pipe is probably causing some back pressure, so I have it on my list to replace. It sounds pretty good too. Installation was a bit tricky. I actually had both the exhaust and the intake manifold on at one point with bolts hand tightened, while my girlfriend was helping me, and I had to pull them both off because the header wasn't sitting flush. I made her a bit late for work. I would not attempt this installation without a second person to help. One bolt is in a place where it is impossible to use a torque wrench and it is the first bolt in the process to tighten, but I got through it and all seems well. I also had the motor mounts replaced and noticed the motor is operating much "tighter" all around and I am hoping it helps the header last longer. Prior to replacing the motor mounts I was experiencing a thud when letting off the gas around 65 mph. -

Exhaust manifolds and C.A.R.B.

Well... It's not Jay Leno's garage, but it will have to do for this header job. At least there is a slight breeze lately.
